The EVO is an awesome phone. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FL7yD-0pqZgI dare you to try to watch this without laughing hysterically. It is rated R for some obscenity so I wouldn't watch it with the kids.

Any thoughts on Droidx v Droid2 v Droid incredible. The world of smartphones is overwhelming. Tried a palm and a window treo a few years ago and was totally frustrated with slowness. Gave up and went back to a very simple phone. I tried logging in to Up to Date on the saleslady's Droid and had a hard time getting used to it. Wondered if the Droid 2 keyboard might be easier. Maybe it just takes time to get used to.

Verizon has done away with its $10/month data requirement for 3G Feature phones (text messaging phones where most people didn't want to use data anyway). Now it's either a phone or a smartphone.
Verizon also introduced a $15/month 150 MB data plan for the smartphones in addition to the $30/month unlimited.
What is the best Verizon smartphone to get now? Looks like the LG Octane (aka LG eNv4) is the best standard messaging phone.

My understanding is that the best "deal" is to get the unlimited package which will be going away in the next few months. I like the idea that the phone can also be a "hot spot".

To use those VPN settings you will have to have VPN set on your server's router. I think you are making it much too hard. LogMeIn and RDP are both apps available for Android.

LogMeIn for your PC or Mac has both free and paid options. LogMeIn Ignition for your smart phone or iPad is only available as a $30 app.

RDP is Remote Desktop Protocol available with all versions of Windows from XP up. It utilizes terminal services, is free and needs no other software than what is already installed. The client can be found at All Programs | Accessories | Remote Desktop Connection and the host computer should be configured properly at Control Panel | System Properties | Remote Tab | Remote Desktop (not assistance) -- turned on and proper users selected.
Caveat: Remote desktop is very fast and pretty secure, but it only works well if you have a static IP. It will work with dynamic IPs, but in that situation, LogMeIn is much easier.
As John points out above, similarly it is free with PCs, but the app will set you back approximately $30 on Android phones.

If you really want remote access, you will probably have to resign yourself to pay for it. But, the good news is, neither apps are subscriptions. You buy them once, and that is it.

Thanks Jon and Bert! Our system has a static IP. Sounds like it would be worth the cost of the app!

You can try RDP from home. Just use your public IP address for the router. You will need to have port 3389 open.

LogMeIn also has another application, called Hamachi, which is a secure VPN that allows a computer outside your office LAN to connect through the internet to a "gateway computer" in the office. The outside computer can then function the same way as an office client (ie, log into the AC main computer database), and run AC as if the outside computer was actually on the office LAN. There is both a free & paid version. Hamachi allows a mobile computer at home or at the hospital, or even a satellite office, to work in real time with the main AC database. I have tried it from home several times, and the speed is quite acceptable with my home & office broadband connection. Obviously, my experience is limited -- try the free version (works with up to 16 clients) before depending on Hamachi for a satellite office with multiple workstations. Hamachi is very workable in my area, however, since local cable bandwidth is now up to 50/5. The initial install instructions were a little unclear on my first attempt, so feel free to PM me if you install it & have questions. It has been very reliable since installation; all I do now is open AC on my home computer and log in.

Hey guys, So I got the phone and I'm a little overwhelmed right now. It's amazing. I bought the logme in ignition and tried it yesterday. It's ok. I'm looking forward to trying the Hamachi. I love the speed of the browser/processor. I love swype. Esp since without it, I would never get anything entered. I remember when we got our Northstar that had 20 Kb. We couldn't begin to imagine how to fill up all that space. And we waited forever and ever for anything to run. Love making every leap I can over the techno divide. Great to be on this side. Thanks everyone

In general I like the phone, the speed, the features. I have some specific and some general questions to ask if anyone has time.
Does anyone know: 1. If youtube content will be available in the browser in the next upgrade?
2. Where to find information in a concise, timely fashion?-I took my first droidx phone back because I thought the Swype didn't work-it turns out that probably no one I got at Verizon or at the store knew about the setting that allow for autoinsertion of spaces. I spent over 2 hours at the store after getting my new phone the other day with someone talking to Verizon and getting escalated because I thought my speed dial didn't work. It turned out that I didn't know, the person at the store didn't know and 2 hours of people at Verizon and Motorola didn't know that to work speed dial on the DroidX you don't push the number and then the phone image, you hold the number down till it dials. The clerk figured it out while waiting to get sent further up the food chain.
3. I'm probably one of the few folks who doesn't like word prediction-I FIND IT DISTRACTING, IRRITATING, AND CONDESCENDING. I would love to turn it off on the browser. Will that be possible on the next upgrade (2.3)? I bypass a lot of that my doing most everything from the Google search function with my preferences put in. Unfortunately, unless I stay logged in, it doesn't keep the preference and even then, I sometimes have to reset it. It seems like a security risk to stay logged in.

The app was $30. It is a little awkward learning to navigate by moving the screen around the cursor. At least I can get there.

For DROIDX 1. Not sure if you are using the X or what version, but YouTube has been available free of charge since v2. I have v2.2 currently. 2. You have three things at play here. They all know certain things. Motorola built the phone, VW knows all things connectivity, CHARGES, and voice mail, plus various other things, and the one I think you are leaving out, Android by Google. It's the OS that you have to know and controls most of the functions. Just as WIN7 has many things in different places than XP, Android is much different than iOS. So, where to get info: -- first, nothing beats playing with it. Sitting down and going through every setting, turning it on and off to see what happens. The setting button is akin to the right click, e.g. there are so many fields you will be in that if one tries right clicking, they will find new options. But look at the store clerk. She found it in less than two hours. -- second DroidX for Dummies. I read it cover to cover. It was OK, but it certainly covered the speed dial. -- Forums: a) www.droidxforms.comb) www.droidforums.net (all things droid) c) others d) and then there's also this little forum here 3. Settings |Language and Keyboard | Word Prediction (turn off) Condescending? This is an inanimate object. It is a little awkward learning to navigate by moving the screen around the cursor. Once in LogMeIn -> Settings | Global Settings | Scroll mode (choose cursor)

When I try to open a you tube video from the browser, I haven't had luck. 2. You have three things at play here. They all know certain things. Wish it wasn't called a SMART phone-not being able to use it has made me feel not smart, LOL -- second DroidX for Dummies. I read it cover to cover. It was OK, but it certainly covered the speed dial. Great Idea. I went and got one. Wish I had it from the beginning. -- Forums: a) www.droidxforms.comb) www.droidforums.net (all things droid) c) others d) and then there's also this little forum here Great resources. 3. Settings |Language and Keyboard | Word Prediction (turn off) Condescending? This is an inanimate object. Agreed. I would rather not have the suggestions. It is a little awkward learning to navigate by moving the screen around the cursor. Once in LogMeIn -> Settings | Global Settings | Scroll mode (choose cursor) I have tried it both ways. The LogMeIn folks are great. Suggested I start with the screen around the cursor till I get more comfortable. Both ways are a little awkward, but are ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL. Such a blessing to be able to log in when I am away. Bert, thanks so much for you help and generosity. Appreciate you as always. Edit: for some reason, some of my comments are in the box and some below.

Trust me, I never know who to call either:
VZW, Motorola, Android
I tend to use the Android boards and call Verizon. I have never called Motorola.
Unfortunately, the Android/Droid forums are a bit difficult to navigate compared to here, but helpful nonetheless. And, they know all the apps to suggest to help with issues.
