I have a Fujitsu-fi6130 for scanning cards and other documents to be attached into AC patients database. This is a TWAIN compatible scanner.
When I do the scanning as a stand alone I am able to specify the black and white option and save it as pdf and the scanned document is of a small size. But when I try to do the scanning through the AC import options, it does not give me the black and white option but just the gray scale option and as a result the scanned document is of a much bigger size.
An eg. is where with standalone scanning the size of a specific document is 200KB whereas when imported through AC the size of the same document is 2.2MB. This cumulatively adds up and as a result the .enc file size is becoming really big.
So has anyone seen this issue before or can anyone point me to whether this is a scanner software issue or AC issue. Any help is really appreciated.

We had same problems with Fujitsu We found a way around by selecting (WIA) scanner interface instead of TWAIN Unfortunately AC versions 3.7.14 and above don't support Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) scanner interface, but only TWAIN I asked AC support regarding this issue, but they are not planning to add (WIA) scanner interface to the new versions Apparently they don't think it is an important issue That's why I am still using old AC version

Thanks for the information.
This is bummer because we now have to scan as a separate standalone document and then import the document into AC. This means we have to unnecessarily add an extra step for scanning the documents and can't use the scan feature of AC.

I am also trying to change the twain setting to allow black and white.
A big downside to large pdf files is difficulty emailing and slower interfacing with any program requiring frequent document uploading e.g. UpDox.
Sending these documents over the internet is visibly sluggish - I am unable to email some charts due to size - printing is slower, email faxing is slower, my day is slower as i use UpDox to fax many documents previously scanned.
I would love Updox if it were faster - it is slow due to my file sizes.
I hope someone comes up with a way within TWAIN to do this... is should be simple... I'll keep looking.

Is there any way in scanner software/setup that will let you make the settings permanent - just a question I use scansnap and do not have twain.

I have tried many ways to try and do that but every time AC seems to override that setting and at this point I am not sure if there is any other way to get around that.

I am not next to our scanner now, but will check this Monday. We have the same Fujitsu and do all of our scanning "through the AC import options" (select the patient, hit "Import New", then "Import/Control your scanner") and the interface opens that allows you to set the resolution, among other things. We use 100x100 dpi, and the documents are readable. The final file size is small. We are still scanning in large numbers of old charts, and may switch to 200x200 when we are just bringing in new, smaller documents. Each time you do a new scan, the same dialog box opens up, but it does save the resolution setting so no settings have to be re-entered. I am not aware that we made a selection to have it work this way.

We have always found it quicker to do just do a mass import with our Fujitsu scanner and generate multiple PDF files. This makes better use of the very fast sheet feeder speed and allows using all features of the scansnap software for changing settings (incl black and white). Then, we do the import of each file into each patients chart after patient has left window and we have given them back their documents.

We have tried the resolution of 100x100, but did not think it was as legible especially for documents with smaller fonts. We do get that option when we scan through AC and that is not a problem. But ideally what we are looking for is the Black and white option, as that reduces the size quite a bit.
As for doing the mass import, we have found it convenient to do it on a per patient basis, directly to AC, as it avoids an extra step.

We too like using the scanner with its excellent software. It auto senses black or color, it converts to duplex if it sees double sided, and auto corrects orientation. We scan to a folder call ScanShare on the desk top. The MA names the file with the pt name. Then when the whole stack is done, she drags and drops right onto the patient charts. It works really slick and much faster than the TWAIN. I LOVE the drag and drop feature of AC!
