Hello All,
I've been using UpDox since err 11/06 I think? and was quite taken aback when they recently changed formats. Stuck with them because of the AC interface, but now I'm informed that they will be charging--get this!--$49.99 a month for the EMR interface subscription!!! For those of you scoring at home, that's more than AC itself, and I already have to pay for Onebox in order to use UpDox!
Obviously not a viable solution. I have reviewed the threads and apart from tangential mention, I haven't seen a recent posting of fax management.
Leslie: I know you use Paperport, but I don't have one of those fancy Brother faxes...we just use Onebox to receive faxes digitally. Would I be able to use Paperport instead in combination with Onebox? Does anyone else have any ideas? Anyone else in the same boat with UpDox?

Claudia,
I am not up to snuff on Onebox although I did look at Updox at one time. I would think you could use Paperport on any computer. If Onebox is the system that allows you to receive faxes then I think you could use the Onebox file as a folder in Paperport. You just have to tell Paperport where to look for its folders. However, do not hold me to this as I have little-to-no expertise with Onebox. On another side, you could buy a Brother MFC with Paperport software included for what 10 months of subscription to Updox would cost you.

I looked at updox andd honestly, did not see a purpose for that. You could purchase a decent scanner, software and have no monthly fees! Don't sign anything long-term is my new motto!

We get our faxes w/ an online service called Innoport, which is cheap and fairly reliable. We can either directly import scanned docs, or print, rescan and import

what a stupid pricing policy. What genius MBA came up with that? Unless the idea is to bascically tell your customers "We really really dont want to support this, but if you insist we're going to make you pay with your first-born child!"

Wayne,
I know!! What's worse (??) is that when I told the nice new manager guy who is basically in charge of the "new improved" system, he was like, "Oh, don't leave us--we'll give you a discount, and it will only be $20 a month for you. By the way, can you give us some idea what the program would be worth to you in terms of time saved? We value your input!" Oy gevalt!
Anyway, thanks all for your input...now I am torn because I have gotten admittedly attached to the ease of interface between UpDox and AC and being paperless (we have not one but two scanners already), BUT............with the threat of increasing cost I am ready to look at other solutions!

Why does updox make paperless? Can't you do paperless with other software?

Just went with SBS 2008 and now use the fax server. Now we're emailing the stuff back and forth, and just e-mail it to our scanning/filing person when it is ready to be filed.

In one office we use windows fax to receive faxes. The faxes are saved to a folder on the desktop and the med rec person reviews them daily and distributes them electronically. We do have a brother machine in this office but the windows fax setup both predated it and worked well so we did not mess with success. I use paperport to sign and return by winfax things that need to be turned around. We use cutePDF to print to PDF.
In the other office we use the brother fax saving only to computer and paperport. That works well as well. There are 2 scanners at each office, one an industrial Fujitsu for bulk scanning the other a scansnap for copies of outgoing correspondence and mail that needs to be saved.

I won't even go into my solution, but others on here like Snappy Fax a lot. If you have any questions, I am sure you can PM George. http://www.snappysoftware.com/My only opinion is I think they would sell a lot more software if they had a better website. But, it is functional, I guess.

Snappyfax rocks! I've been using my license for 2 years now, after retiring WinFax Pro.

And, to think it works better than a Microsoft product!

Claudia,
I still use the old UpDox... but that's only possible because I haven't yet upgraded to AC 4 yet... just procrastinating while getting other things cleared up.
I also had concerns about the new pricing model... I was in email contact with Andy Barbash (their co-founder) about that and he led me to believe that the ultimate cost is essentially unchanged, in his words: "apractis clients of ours (that is the magic $90 a year you pay us for a support membership) get a special discount to UpDox Network that nets only $25 a month instead of 50 and the AC $20 a month goes away". The 'AC $20 a month' being the monthly interface fee.
Again, I haven't used the new system, so I'm not sure I'm going to keep it. The good thing about UpDox was the integration with AC, making IMPORTING faxes very easy... rather than saving the PDF fax to a drive then importing, it would import directly from UpDox. There are a few other features I liked including sending emails with some security features, but if I end up getting rid of UpDox, I'll likely just use Mozilla's Thunderbird or Outlook or something like them.
You don't need to have UpDox to use Onebox, so you can set your email client to retrieve the faxes/emails/etc from Onebox just like UpDox does. But, if it's true that you only use Onebox to receive faxes digitally, you'd save money using something like pFax, where I think it only costs $4 a month for unlimited pages of faxes received. I use Onebox for several other features that you can't do with pFax. I'll have to look into the SnappyFax though. But in the end, your concerns about staying paperless definitely doesn't depend on your use of UpDox.
Good luck and keep us posted on your progress/decisions,
chris

I have been using the UPDOX NETWORK for about 6wks now. I can see the utility of what the new group is doing. That said, I am setting up the old UPDOX DESKTOP (MIADOC) to bridge the risks of the hightech start-up (UPDOX NETWORK) business risks......They have almost duplicated document management of the old UPDOX DESKTOP but their cost structure is way out there. Especially since the onebox account cost me about 20 dollars a month and MIADOC cost 29 dollars for the software. I do beleive there is a roll for desktop and network document management. It would be nice if JON (AC) could allow MIADOC (old desktop updox) to integrate more with the new AC 4.0. MIADOC/OLD UPDOX has saved me a fortune in operation costs and Daryl Strickland (miadoc) is a quality/cost efficient driven IT developer.

To Redhedmd,
The brother mfp that has paperport on it can be bought at staples. I was actually able to get a "refurbished" one.... aka someone didn't like it for 350 dollars. The usual is about 500. I have version 8660dn. It is networkable... as I have a wireless network in my office. Additionally, it can come with an additional paper drawer for printer if you need to. I had a very limited budget in January when I resurrected my practice.
Hope this helps. Good luck
Jennifer

Any ideas on what the difference between Paperport SE and Paperpot?? You can buy Brother MFP machines for under 150.00 refurb from Tiger Direct. Comes with paperport SE....you can also find Paperport on EBAY. Just wondering.
