I am starting a solo practice and will be using quickbooks as my practice management/accounting software and AC as my EMR. I would like to see the "flow" of transactions. ie. patient checks-in......sees medical assistant....sees doctor.....generates a bill.....bill goes to insurance company....check comes in to practice.....check gets posted to quickbooks.

Can anyone give me advice??? thanks!!

I use Quickbooks for my office's payroll, and it ROCKS! The cost is ~$60 (they recently increased this slightly).

For the rest of my PMS I use a program that I put together 20 years ago under MS Access...

We are using Quickbooks Pro and Office Ally. You can get the best price on Quickbooks in January about $100. We also have a payroll software by Quickbooks that makes things easier.

I just started a practice myself. I purchased Quickbooks Pro 2007 a while ago, but never used it. I began entering some data in there, mostly purchases. I think it's very comprehensive if you implement all its features.

I have asked my accountant to help with the payroll. Is the $60 you pay for payroll a monthly fee?

What do you folks recommend for practice management? Isn't AC enough?

I am a bit different as I too am solo but I dont file any insurance or do any billing so for me quickbooks is great. Everyone pays the day of service and we use it for payroll. Definately worth it for us.

We are using Office Ally for the insurance submissions. It is intuitive and free. When you use the internet you get paid faster period.
AC is being upgraded to have an integrated PM part but it isn't quite ready yet.

I think that the $60 is a one time fee for the payroll software or it could have to be renewed yearly, but not monthly.

The $60/month is for "QuickBooks Assisted Payroll" where we enter in the hours and rates, and they do the calculations. They then send us the numbers which we use to automatically print out the checks and they pay off all biweekly taxes due. The Quickbooks software was sold to me for a nominal amount with the 2009 upgrade included for free. Not a bad deal!

I used to use PayAmerica for payroll for 18 years and they pretty much did the same for about 3 times the price and anytime that I needed an extra copy of an end-of-year report I would get billed another $200 for the "extra service". They had no web presence for assistance. When they royally screwed up my taxes after I incorporated my office and got a new Tax ID, I finally switched over to something else (Intuit payroll).

I'm delighted, now finishing up my second year with this company. I would use their software for PMS, but I do it through MS Access directly... I'm just used to doing it that way. The Quickbooks software, though, is very thorough, i.e. more that I could ever want.

Just out of coincindence, I was doing an online search for a cheaper way to do payroll (currently using Paychex and it has become way too expensive) and came across what I believe is a relatively new service from Intuit. I do not need Quickbooks so I was unable to access their Payroll software without paying the stiff Quickbooks price. But they now have an Online Payroll service for $9.95/month which handles all the taxes, tracks vacation and PTO time, fills out the quarterly reports, etc. It can Efile the taxes in many states for you also (no extra charge). Anyway, it looks great and I will likely be ditching Paychex the first of the year in favor of this. I am waiting until then so I do not have to enter all of this year's payroll information into their system. This will save me about $70/month!!
