It should be fine. I haven't run into any issues over the last 5 years. It's transparent to the OS. Performance impact appears to be negligible.
Most people have Everyone listed on their shared folder permissions. It would be rather easy to just take the data with you over the network. No need to steal or break in.
Bitlocker protects against physical theft and boot time attacks. So if the only thing between your computer and a thief is a window, I would strongly recommend using disk encryption. Disk encryption will do nothing to enhance network security.
If you have a TPM, it's really nice since the password check only activates if some attempt is made to modify the system. Other disk encryption programs require you to enter the password everytime at reboot. That could be a major issue if a PC needs to be rebooted remotely. That's why BitLocker with TPM is so prevalent.
