XP Embedded is not really meant for typical practice usage. It's typically used on static systems with very light installations. For example, a POS/Register system at a convenience store. It lacks a lot of the user interface components and is difficult to update. For instance, you can't even update it without a WSUS server. Even if the support doesn't end til 2017, it's not worth the headache. It will be a very big pain updating and installing the components. You would easily lose any hardware savings to increased setup time/troubleshooting.

The new version of XP Embedded (Windows Embedded Standard 7) is also quite similar. Windows 7 has extended support until 2020. Windows 8 until 2023.
