The way Amazing Charts works is that while you're not actively looking something up, the file is unlocked. You can remove the file, and then put it back, and THEN look something up, and AC won't ever know it was gone during the time you were not using it.
Most backup programs do indeed lock the file while it is being copied. Fortunately, the files copy quickly, and most of the time you won't see it.
The .ldb file is a database lock file, and does not need backing up. On rare occasions (computer crash during an AC write - rare) the database remains locked, and removing this file unlocks it, but this is to be done only in the event everything is locked up.
