Bert-

Thanks again for such a comprehensive reply. I am using Acronis B&R 10, installed locally on our SBS server. From what I've read, VSS is enabled by default but like you mentioned the GUI is quite cumbersome and difficult to learn.

I'm currently researching how to create an image for the server using Acronis, I'm not sure why a critical feature of the software is difficult to find even with the wizards. Lot of googling, coming up. It looks like backup assist would have been the preferable choice, but I'd used Acronis a while back without issues so that's the direction that I went. This is only my third day with B&R, I don't have any reason to doubt that it'll suit my needs once I get the kinks worked out. I will update this post if and when I get it setup correctly for anyone else in a similar boat.

edit: enabling VSS was NOT on by default, I'll run it again tonight and see what happens.
