Bert, your link was for Photoshop Elements. Can you do this with elements or do you need "big" Photoshop?
Somewhat answering my own question, Adobe's website has a listing for a "background eraser tool" in Photoshop Elements (V8 no less, they are now on V9) using (?control) E.
I will try to play with this this weekend. While not everyone has big Photoshop, a lot more people (including myself) have Photoshop Express.
