I am not sure I completely follow, so bear with me if I ask any stupid questions. Are the computers you take off on a workgroup, e.g. are they workgroup computers? Or are they are on a separate subnet which could connect to a managed switch or router, which would seem easier?
Finally, in the scenario you describe where you can't browse to the database in the popup window, can you map the database folder to each computer?
