What antivirus and spyware programs would users recommend for PC's running AC? AC has told me there are problems with Norton.

Ron, I use Symantec Corporate Edition 10.
I've had no issues w/ Symantec and A.C. whatsoever.
It runs on my server, and client versions are installed onto the clients from the server. Once these were installed, the server manages all updates and pushes these updates out to the clients. Scheduling of client virus scans originate from the server as well.

Ron,
We actually ran into a issue with Trend Micro too in that last few weeks a month. There is a thread on this where lots on people chimmed in and I detailed the issues we experienced. We are now using Kaspersky which has the best anti-virus search engine, program going. It is so good that you get the Kaspersky anti-virus when you buy the Zone Alarm products. ZA just lets Kaspersky do the work. After our trend issues, we very briefly tried AVG as I bought a cheap boxed set 0f 7.5 locally on the advice of AC tech support.

Although I hated the interface and the terminology, it did seem to work alright (24 hours after I bought it there was a review in computer shopper that said all the things I hated about it, live and learn, right?) So one night while updating it offered me to "Upgrade" for "Free" to 8.0, which was supposed to attend to some of the issue I and CS hated so much. Well, this update froze Nancy's Gateway laptop up solid with one of those, the CPU is overloaded at 100% steady full time kind of things, screw that!

So I did a system restore to return to the 7.5 and seeing that we had two new clean machines just sitting there waiting to be used, I tried Kaspersky and except for this one really weird issue, we are extremely happy with it. This thing finds things that most of the others miss. It is really great at finding all sorts of things your old program missed. Unless something really bad happens that would force us to switch, this is where I am staying. And Hey when you call tech support, there are nice American young folks at the phone center in eastern MA, to answer your call. Although they like to bury the phone number, I guess to keep support to more email and less live calls, but I found it and will gladly share....

Good luck,

Ask ten different users and get ten different answers, lol. smile They are pretty much all good. AVG is free and the newest version has an incredibly untuitive UI.

I just got a notice that AVG free will no longer be supported and I must upgrade to the paid version? What gives?

Sounds like AVG is a) having financial difficulties or b)doing so well they no longer feel the need to entice new customers with a free offering.

Several years ago I stumbled onto AVG. At the time it was the top-rated anti-virus program ( or darn near--and this was the free version). But alot of companies start off with a top-notch product but don't maintain their lead. A couple of years ago I started using Avast! which had top ratings. At the time I remeber seeing high ratings for Kaspersky too. I occassionally go back to Computer Shopper or Cnet (and some other sites) to see who the supposedly top firewalls and antivirus programs are.

No, AVG just wants you to buy the full version, and who can blame them?

The ad is worded to steer you to buy the full version, but there is an updated free version:

http://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Vi...dl-AVGAntiVir&subj=dl&tag=button

You really have to hunt for it on their website now, and click through a half-dozen links.

The paid version is infitinitely better than the free. You get what you pay for. frown
