After waiting many weeks to do the SQL server 2016 upgrade, I tried to do it this weekend, but unsuccessful. I am using the latest install guide released a couple days ago. During setup, the installer is supposed to let you select the instance of SQL server to upgrade, but this option is not listed and goes straight to install. It only installs SQL Browser and SQL Writer. The "Database Engine Services" and "SQL Client Connectivity SDK" are not installed; therefore, I only get 2 green checkmark vs 4 listed in the install guide. I then had to roll back my VM to before attempting to get my environment back up and running.

OS is Windows Svr 2012 R2 standard with all updates as of 6/26/2022.

Anyone else running into same or similar problem? How to fix? Do I go and use one of the earlier SQL server package from AC?

Most likely you're running SQL 2012 32 bit. You'll need to have support switch you over to 64 bit SQL 2012 first. (Recredential) Then you can follow the guide.
