I think it is time to have a new forum on Information Technology, computers, networking or anything to do with IT. This could be anything from how to find the Start Button to how to build your own server to the advantages of running peer-to-peer.

We used to have a forum named Tech Talk, which got a lot of traffic, but it has since died down. I suggest questions and comments to be directed to this forum. The other forum will be made obsolete.

This isn't a forum for Ask James, but I am assigning him to be the moderator. I think we all agree if he doesn't know the most about AC and technology, then he is pretty damned close. I think James is ideal to be associated with this forum as he:

a) has been on the ACUB for a number of years and has been on this ACUF since its inception
b) he has helped countless users with his knowledge of SQL, IT, computers, et.al. especially how it relates to AC.
c) as you can see from many of the users on here, he has not only helped them tremendously whether voluntarily on the board or as a commercial vendor and has garnered rave reviews.
d) I believe we can all trust his opinions and comments and any commercial ventures he may set up with users since he is one of us

Thank you, Bert. Your comments were most kind. I look forward to seeing this part of the forum grow as IT hasn't gotten easier, and IT hasn't gotten worse, but IT has gotten more interesting and a bit more complicated.

As James was saying Windows Server 2012 is at EOL. May as well jump to 2019 and skip 2016 plus Microsoft is going to a subscription model soon. You can do it yourself or get someone local or contact James and he likely can help. James, what is up with Windows 11?

Looking forward to this. Seems like two things are known so far:

1. 4 years left on Win 10, I'm sure you would suggest not waiting until the deadline to switch, so practically about 3 years left.

2. Win 11 will only run on PCs about 2 years old or newer,,,so basically nothing I use now will be viable in 4 years.

A friend whose work is commercial AV said a lot of his bread-and-butter programs will NOT run on Win 11.

Hi DocGene,
I've not been able to keep any workstation working for longer than 5 years since 1998. I think the electrons get slower. And I buy nice workstations now - All-in-One with latest generation Intel I7, because keeping staff working instead of waiting for a slow restart or IT support saves money.

Anyone using AC on Windows 11 Pro?

I am not. But, I am not sure if I would want to be the "beta tester" for AC on Windows 11. Probably worth waiting unless you are already on Windows 11.

I have had two PCs in Windows 11 Pro this week. So far no issues.

Upgraded from Windows 10. Kept files and apps.

I think he meant did you install Windows 11 and AC on brand new computers or refurbished computers.

I have several PCs with Windows 10 Pro and Microsoft has offered free Upgrade to Win 11. Upgraded them. It kept the AC, other programs and files in place. So far even AC runs faster (pulling import items and script writer).

So what you are saying is that the script writer is opening, making a script, and sending it to the pharmacy in under 74 minutes. Cool, I have to get Windows 11.

What is this 13 page "agreement" that popped up tonight when I started AC?
Is there something nefarious hidden in there? Looks like pretty standard boiler plate legalese -- and I'm in no position to evaluate whether it is good for me or not.

Also at the end is a whole page about CoverMyMeds. What is that all about -- and why is AC embedding such slime in their EHR?

Just got a new laptop with Windows 11 home on it and after having to have Tech support help load AC it is working as all the rest of the workstations. I can not comment on speed of it because I am not using it myself. I will try to use it some this next week and post something about the speed of imports and things. The oldest computer in the office is just over 5 years old (April 2016), 2 others are 3 years (August 2018) with all 3 being Lenovo. They do seem to slow down over time.

Yeah, I guess having to move to Windows 11, means upgrading computers. Hard to do with Lenovos, because they simply last so long. Mine are seven years old, and could go another three easily. But, I just purchased some new Dells, which has hardware that just blows away what we have now with the M.d NVMe cards.

I was quoting out 8 PCs with Dell and Lenovo. Lenovo was a lot more for the same thing, and they were rude. Dell, on the other hand, are exemplary is their customer server and support.

Redoing the server. So, now the only thing that will slow us down is the actual code of AC.

Ok, so I used the new HP laptop today and it does seem to be very responsive. Very little lag with pulling charts and probably the biggest change is with moving tabs within the chart, from exam to imported as an example. Imported items are having to be opened using the "open with default application" command and not just with double clicking. I think that is just a setting. Prescribing seems as fast as the desktop. I know all of this depends on the Wifi Signal but am trying to compare to the other laptop in the office running on Windows 10. I'm supposed to have a free upgrade to 11 at some point with the laptop I bought in June. I think I will do it based off of today's experience. I've posted stats for the laptops below. Both are from Sam's Club.

I just looked back at purchases and I do have an older Dell computer desktop that we are still using. I bought it refurbished in August 2014 for $235.01 (Dell Optiplex 780 3.16GHz 750GB MT Computer (Refurbished). Total we have 3 Lenovo, 3 Dell which are all desktops and then 2 laptops the LG which is mine, very light and I do like it and the new HP. The LG is very nice, great screen and great battery life. It is responsive but seems to lag behind the new one. The new HP has a better processor according to benchmark website but not by much. Hope this helps.

If I do, any comments re ACs posted HW recommendations? For a single clinician (maybe 2 in future) - 3 staff - occasional remote access:

Intel i7, Win 10 Pro, 16 GB , 1-2 TB HD.

I suppose I should give up preference for SSD or should I fight for it (that is pay for it)

I don't have experience with servers... so looking at Dell Workstations (I like Dell) -

Hope not to upgrade for another 4-5 yrs by then we'll be doing META medicine with holograms etc.

I sent you a private message.

Basically, get somebody who knows what they are doing to set up the server. We are using James Summerlin (James NT) and have been very very satisfied. He is really really good at what he does.

I am not going to give you recommendations on the server, basically here is where you do not want to skimp, get a decent processor and lots and lots of memory. I think the solid-state drives are well worth the additional cost, they give a significant speed improvement.

Work stations are mostly i5 processor, 8 gigs RAM, all solid-state drives, Win 10 Pro. I am not in any hurry to switchover to Win 11.

Generally you may get more of a response if you start a new thread for questions like this.
