Updox has a promotion now with a month of free-texting. Anyone care to share how they use texting with Updox? I understand that it can be used for a single message instead of using the portal or email. The advantage I can see would be for larger volume uses such as visit reminders. Does anyone do that? What are the mechanics of doing so? Any other uses? Is this a worthwhile product for you?

Jon,

We have been using Updox texting for most of this year now, and the texting is fantastic for quick messages to and from the office, such as refills, appt requests, and appt reminders the day before the appt. We always ask to reply so we make sure they have the text. Also blast text for flu shot clinic notification worked well too. Downside is the extra cost and the messages disappear after 48 hours which is a huge pain in the [censored], so patients have to screenshot results such as labs mammo reports or xray results if they want to keep them for a long time. Tried to let Updox know about this but no changes to this problem as of yet. But to be fair to Updox, I think they are constrained by all of the HIPAA rules, so the disappearing message with texts is a result of HIPAA, I think.

I tried the free month of secure texting. It's basically like the Updox web portal but notifications are sent via text instead of email. For us, it didn't work out and we did not add the service. I do think secure text is easier than the Updox web portal for patients. But I also don't like how the messages disappear after a while as Jimmie said.
