I am in a "pickle" as my grandmother would have said. I just updated my office computers to 3.712 on Friday before I left. I did a backup (I thought) before I started and Claire made a copy of the database while she was helping me.

I am at home now and in using the vpn I found I still had 3.6 something. Well, I updated and found that now it is 3.714. I kept getting a message saying it couldn't find amazingmeds.mbd and would I like to look for it somewhere else. I had it go to the copy of ac on the server-it opened just fine with my entire last month's appointments and notes are gone!!!

The AC backup service says my last backup was 27 days ago-it was Friday. I had planned to get caught up on some billing-anyone have suggestions or time to help me?

Thanks

i've had this problem, too, and also solved it.
makes me ask the question, on which drive did you install AC?
the default installation drive is C:\, are you installing AC either onto a server or other partition named something else?

I did this update while on the vpn at home.
It didn't give me an option of where to put it. It said the c drive, but I can't find anything on the c on the vpn-i'm going to check my local c drive
Thanks

so you have just the one computer at work, it has only one hard drive, you log in via vpn, and installed it in the default manner, is that right?

did you download and install it on your work computer, or on your home computer? in other words, did you open your internet browser on your work computer via vpn, or did you open it on your home computer?

I have 6 computers at work on a server. When I am at home I have a pc that I log into on a vpn on my server. I tried vpn on one of my laptops that I brought home and found it had the same problem I tried to describe above.

Thanks so much for trying to help me Larry. I tried repsonded to the private messages but I guess they didn't go through. I really appreciate you trying to help me. My last AC installations do not pause and ask me where to put it-it just defaults to c drive. I am stil so new at server stuff I am guess I will wait till in the morning so the help desk can hopefully help me undo this. Thanks again for everything. The AC community is so helpful. vr

Vicki:

My lamebrain approach would be to go to every computer that you use and search for amazingcharts.mdb. Reset the path on each computer to its respective copy of amazingcharts.mdb until you find the right file.

You can reset the path using Amazing Utilities in your AC folder.

If this doesn't make sense, let me know. I will also alert the rest of the gang to your problem.

Vicki,

There is help, and we should be able to find your data. After we do, I/We would have several suggestions as to how to install new upgrades ESPECIALLY since you have a server set up. You see with a server, you do not have to, nor should you have AC set up on the server -- ONLY the folder. I NEVER install AC on the server. That way when you upgrade, you install the new version onto each client. Your data stays far away from the installs and only tuneups are needed done from the clients.

Also, from here, do not do anything else. And, please if you do, do it from work and not remotely from home

Here is what I suggest. At this point, I am offering to log into your computer either with Remote Assitance or GoToMeeting. I would talk to you on the phone while either talking you through it or taking over your computer to look around. Do you mean AmazingMeds.mdb or AmazingCharts.mdb. And, the install shouldn't overwrite the databases, although I would never count on that.

Like I said, there are things we can talk about in the future, but let's get this problem solved. But, one tip. There should only be ONE person making backups, not two or more.

Let me know what you want to do.

Vicki,
Bert is a personal friend of mine, we practice in the same town in Maine. He has helped me out of numerous jams, and I can virtually guarantee that he'll help you out of this one.
Call him please. Since he didn't give me permission yet to post his phone number (try Googling RiverviewPediatrics/Brewer/ME), you may call me and I'll give you his number. I am at 207-356-0461.

His point about not installing AC onto the server is a very imporant one. Never install AC onto the server. Just have an AC folder that is shared so that all computers can link to it. Only the database resides there, not the installation.

The installations take place on the individual computers (clients), not the server. In this manner, your data should never get overwritten.

Hope either Bert or I can help you.

Thanks so much to everyone, especially Bert who helped me recover my database. He also gave me awesome advice on
server structure and using AC. I cannot begin to say how grateful I am to be a part of this AC community
