Need advice re:secure email to send lab results to patients. Thinking of saving some work for USPS- by sending lab results to patients by email through this secure email. Don't know if HIPAA complaint; they say they are secure. If we have this till portal comes into picture- maybe we can save some trees. Any thoughts, feedbacks or suggestions to have better secure channels to patients in this mischevious world?? http://www.voltage.com/vsn/purchase.htmhttp://www.voltage.com/vsn/freetrial.htmThanks in advance.

We use a service called RelayHealth for secure messaging to patients. It only costs us $25 a month. Works great, and we have it linked to our website with our kinda-sorta logo. If you go to our website at www.doctorcoghill.com and then go to the Online Office you will see the sign-in page. The service also has Online Consultation capability, which we also use.

Awww, Man! You blew our cover! I guess I'll have to release the sharks with lasers attached to their head upon you, fiend.

Gee Wayne, love you too man.... Say hey, where can I get some of those lazer hunting sharks, sounds like they'd be perfect for "home defense". But seriously, didn't you out yourself (or your sister) back when you were all proud and we were like "oh wow" when you were first showing off your nice new little website? So you outted yourself dude. As a matter of fact, I think I was the first one to ask if the nice looking young lady on the home page was you sis, and that is when you told us all that no, that was just some clip art girl.... Anyhow, thanks for the good laugh, I certainly needed it tonight... Be well. Paul

Yeah, I guess I did.
BTW, I think Dr. Evil can get you a shipment of those sharks. Or is it his son....?

That's right, you must call him Dr. Evil... "I didn't go to Evil Medical School for four years to be refered to as Mr. Evil!"

Wcoghill:
thank you.
I was quoted $62.00 odd per month. Your office must have locked in (grandfathered?) under old premiums.
Heard about medem.com or medfusion.com or zixcorp.com
regards.

We used to use Medem. Its an ok service. But you can't attach documents to the message with Medem. With Relay, both you and the patient can attach documents to the message, and you can route messages to specific people.
Medem works better as a general, but primitive, practice website. In fact, the reason I developed a real website for us was because I wanted to move to Relay, but as your primary practice website their offering falls short. But its a great addition to your website.

joseph, Those are all great suggestions. If you want to go website to the patient and back. If you are looking for a direct connection, so: A) the patient doesn't have to go to the site (for whatever reason) and B) you have a record of exactly when they picked up the lab which can typed or copied, then CertifiedMail at www.certifiedmail.com is your answer. I looked at tens of programs, and this was the only one that was decent. It is $9.95 per month. I wish everyone had it (doctors), because you can send huge record files through it confidentially. The nice thing about it is, you have to subscribe to it to initiate sending but the patient can reply without being a subscriber. Take a look.

Let me "second" Bert's nomination for certifiedmail.com I've used this many times (receiving end of his certified emails) and they work very nicely and easily.

OK, Very simple. CertifiedMail www.certifiedmail.com has a plugin that allows you to send secure email in the same fashion directly from Outlook and I think Outlook Express.

And, you can change the default to Outlook anytime. Things may have changed, but I researched this one for months.
It works the way most major hospitals work. Your email goes to their secure server encrypted. The person you send to gets an email notification. They only see the email on the server. They can download it encrypted if they wish. You can also at any time take the message back. You also know the exact time they pick up the email or open it.
I believe they have a thirty day trial which you can set up on rather quickly.

Bert, we did that once...when we were in college. I'm not going there again.
I thought we agreed, from thereon and forever more we order individual desserts.

Got a mthly subscription for certified mail.
Seems the only issue I have is:
Patients will get a notice with a link that there is an email for them. Then they click on this link.
So far fine.
Then they have to set up a password at certifiedmail.com (of their choice).
Then reenter the password.
Then they can open the email.
This password setup from patient side is something I do not like.
Why should they have to go one more step of setting up a password just to open their email?
Thoughts? Thank you.

joseph,
Glad you are trying it out. At times, I wish that wasn't there as well. But, it is supposed to be certified. Without the password anyone with access to your computer could open the email.
Their email address goes into the username automatically after the first time. Their password can be: password or mail or anything easy.
Remember, they can send you back a reply anytime by going into their web account. They need a username and password to get into the account.
It is also simple to renew your password. The only problem is most doctors can't even figure out how to put in a password.
