Hi Folks-
I dont know how many of you have signed up with the UPDOX MERCHANT SERVICES for credit card acceptance, but I did. I generally like the service and the fees are competitive. HOWEVER, when I repeatedly asked UPDOX and THEIR OUTSOURCED vendor (they are called OPENEDGE)about the new EMV card swipers, I was stonewalled. I really was not getting an answer but I did force their hand to at least divulge their model. This week they admitted that they do NOT have a compliant card swiper nor the ability to accept any other vendor's compliant swiper. (You all understand that in 2015 there has been a liability shifting to the merchant (that is you and me) who does not have a compliant card swiper in the event of fraud losses.
It is CRITICAL that all of us who accept and swipe credit cards have a compliant card swiper. When UPDOX finally admitted that this was something that was on their 2016 calendar, their suggestion to me was: DO NOT SWIPE. MANUALLY TYPE IN EVERY CREDIT CARD.
Well, that is a solution, but ridiculous in my practice. I post this for those who are considering UPDOX CREDIT CARD services. Don't go with them until they can assure you that they now have a compliant EMV card swiper. Go with a different vendor.
Also, their stonewalling me makes me angry!

We just switched vendors, seems like any yahoo can start up a credit card processing company. ? will your monthly compliance fees go up if not using proper card reader. We got a new compliant card reader nice and small, reads the new chip cards and connects directly to my network so transactions are much faster than older dial up reader. Good luck, presume you sent them packing.

Yes,they now surprised me with some unexpected compliance fees. Can I ask what make/brand reader did you purchase? And is it set up so fees credit to the patient's account automatically or do you hand post?

The unit is a VeriFone VX 520, charges have to be posted manually(we outsource our billing).

I'm not too worried about fraud loses. We don't keep CC numbers. And known patients aren't going to run fake cards.
That leaves hackers who could infiltrate our network, attach malware to our card reader and skim numbers.
Possible ala Target. But run a decent firewall, don't let your employee accounts run administrator mode, ban anything going into USB slots. I'd say the risk is low.
I do plan to upgrade my terminal when I have some time and the price is decent and the merchant supports it.
Opinions from the resident net experts? Any other general malware/cyptolocker/card skimmer security advice?
Should we ban all internet use and make our employees use smartphones? I thought about buying chromebooks for surfing on break or home. Yea or nea?
