I type most of my notes. However there are times when It is easier to sit and dictate a paragraph or two about a patient. I had tried dragon software at one point.This was about 3 years ago And still had limitations with certain wordsAnd the cost for the medical version Just did not make sense.


Just recently my wife Urged me, as she likes to do, To get A new cell phone. One of the features is Being able to dictate text messages and Emails.It uses Google Speak As The dictation software. I find it to be very accurate. And have used it to send an email To myself With the paragraph or two of information I can then copy and paste into the patient chart.With the exception of some capitalization errors Spelling mistakes are Minimal. Most Medical words are recognized For example hydrochlorothiazide Cymbalta Lexapro Metoprolol And concerta All can be dictated without any errors. In fact this post Is being made using the Dictation ability of my phone.For a solo practitioner Finding cost effective solutions is always an interest to me And free is pretty cost effective.

I have played around with the Google App and have never considered to use it for dictation. I'm surprised that it knows most of those medical words. I type pretty fast but think this is a useful tool to add to the arsenal.

I think it's a feature (like Apple's "Siri"), whereby you can dictate into an Android based smartphone.

It's technically not called "google speak". It's just the Google App. Instead of typing once you launch the app, you press the mic button and start dictating

how do you use the App To get the dictation from your phone into amazing charts?

As far as i know, Google Speak doesn't interface to AC. i think one of the earlier posts suggested dictating into the body of an email, then sending the email over to a PC, where you cut n paste into AC.

Yes, I do believe that the Google app places a microphone onto my display, so when I need to type, I just pick the microphone and talk. I do this to creat text messages too. Anyway, I will dictate into an email, then send it to the office email or to the my UPDOX email. The dictation can then be cut and pasted into a note in AC, or if you want the entire dictated document, it can be uploaded into "imported items".

I've been using my iphone to dictate into AC
For notes where you need a paragraph or two or if you are on the road and want to finish a note:
I open up AC in LogMeIn
go to the note section that I want , usually the plan
then just open the keyboard, hit the microphone and presto! dictate into the note \

so satisfying!!

or another way: open up a dropbox word document on iphone
then dictate into
then open same dropbox document on desktop
then cut and paste into chart

ta da!

Has anyone tried dictating using any of the chrome apps for voice dictation and its accuracy for medical terms?
If it works may be easier than using dropbox

Ahhh, it must be the "OK GOOGLE" thing they have. It is pretty good.

Using cell phone for medical dictation ? HIPPA considerations ?

Using DropBox for medical dictation ? HIPPA considerations ?

Using Logmein for completing medical records in AC ? HIPPA considerations ?

I really would like to do all of the above but am somewhat concerned about HIPPA regulations. I would also like to dump my land line at the office and just use cell phone [much more ecconomical] but have not been able to find a cell phone carrier that is HIPPA compliant-hence my concerns about HIPPA compliance.

Any comments?

Much depends on how it is set up.

so I dictate into the i phone but I cleverly DO NOT put in ANY patient identifiers
it goes into drop box
I open it on my desk top wherein lives AC
and then I cut and paste the text into AC - usually the plan box but sometimes the history box
and then I erase it from dropbox - poof - ready for next dictation

As my mild cognitive impairment progresses, I'm sure I won't remember which chart I was working on to paste the text string into, but for now - I'm OK

I am typically doing just the chart I am working on .

anyone seeing any HIPPA violations there?

Dragon 13 Premium (not Medical) works extremely well in a remote window (Windows RDP) if you have a fairly decent internet connection. And it is easy to build a vocabulary of medical words and terms. You can dictate directly into AC fields.
You can't use it for dictation into AC on the same machine, and it won't work in this window (the AC user board) or UpDox windows. Nuance is very clever at keeping the price of medical dictation high.

Google is great for ordinary speech; only so-so for medical terminology.

Also, I have discovered that V13 works amazingly well with the microphone built into laptops and tablets, so you don't need to use your cell phone, and you actually have a keyboard for corrections -- although Dragon is close to 100% accurate with a little practice.

Dragon - that is annoying that it is so restrictive
I am going for free stuff that works - freemium model

actually even windows 7 has voice dictation which works fairly well , I haven't tried it in AC directly but bet that would work too.
