Thanks for the article. Good reason to go with Windows 8/8.1. Only the Enterprise and Ultimate editions of Windows 7 have bitlocker. I haven't seen many practices with either. I'm just glad they finally figured out that BitLocker is necessary on the professional edition rather than making an "Ultimate" feature.

Sandeep, I couldn't agree more. I never did like MS limiting Bitlocker to Enterprise and Ultimate Editions and I voiced my disagreement several times over the years.

hello,
I have win 7 ultimate on my 'main server' with bitlocker encryption.
how much do I have to worry about FIPS compliance and is this a must. If so I may have to use win 8 / 8.1 pro
but it means another upgrade and paying another $ 200 to get the upgrade!I had win 7 ultimate because initially AC was not compatible with win 8 but now it is with the pro versions.
thanks
Bala

Bala,

If you have Windows 7 Ultimate with bitlocker already enabled, then I would say you are all set. FIPS compliance is nice and I do recommend it, but you should save it for your next upgrade.

Regarding Windows 8, no need to jump on that now. Stick with your current upgrade schedule. Perhaps wait for Windows 10 to come out then go with Bitlocker with FIPS.
