1. www.logmein.com this is my favorite and it is free 2. www.gotomypc.com almost identical to above but no free version 3. xp pro has it built in but you will need a static ip OR a service to update your dynamic ip I have used all 3, and #1 is a clear winner in my book. pcanywhere is also an option, but I know lillte about it.

Adil, why do you like logmein the best? I am using the XP builtin, and it seems faster..?

I like logmein for several reasons. I can give permissions to other users and monitor their remote usage. I also have several PC's hooked up to logmein, so I can log in and jump around to different ones. I have my home PC, office PC's, wife's PC, parents PC, etc. I can troubleshoot for people this way instead of talking them through things. (somehow I became the IT guy). I do not have to memorize an IP address or have any special configuration, just log in to logmein from any internet connected PC, even a MAC. And all the PC's have dynamic IP's so I do not have to pay for a static. I am sure XP built-in would suffice, but I really like the user friendliness of logmein. gotomypc is just as easy and convenient but there is amonthly charge per pc.

adiljaffer--do you need to leave your computer on to access it via logmein? do you put in hibernation or how do you keep others from accessing your computer when you are not there?

yes, you must leave a PC on at the office that is running logmein. Many offices do not shut down every PC every night. As far as access, every PC is password protected. Every one has the screen saver come on after 5 minutes of idle time. Then, you cannot use the PC again without entering the password. So, all of my PC's do not hibernate, they just run continously with the screen saver. Those LCD's use very little energy and last forever. The screensaver is a scrolling logo of our practice, so it looks very custom, even though it is right from the XP display settings.

Adil, do you use Dragon for dictation? Have you used it across the logmein interface?
I use Dragon across the (xp) remote login connection, by running dragon on the local pc or tablet. However, I have to use the local dictation box of Dragon, and then paste it across the connection into the AC section I am dictating into. Direct dictation into AC across the remote connection scrambles the upper/lower case of the text.
Direct dictation into AC when on the base office system does not have this problem of shifting characters, so I am sure the problem is arising with the connection, not with Dragon or AC.
If Logmein works with Dragon doing direct dictation entry, this would probably make me switch (or add)!

I am answering my own question. Using logmein and Dragon remotely works fine. I am actually using Dragon to enter this message. Dragon is running on my tablet PC that is linked by a Verizon EVDO-1 link to logmein which is logged into an office pc running AC3B that opened the link to the user board and now entering this message. (this is also while my wife is driving us home from a nice dinner at 65 mph.. she wanted me to add this in case someone could tell we are driving now ...that I am not doing the driving).
(also dragon across my tunnel office-home network works now too)
no problems, mate! 8)

This will seem rather lame compared to the former offerings but .... avvenu.com offers a free file sharing app that may have some "remote access" upgrades for a fee. If I need a file from home or work this works very reliably.
