I know this has been discussed before and I vaguely remember Bert telling what he uses but can any one suggest good, cheap office messaging programs which refresh and notify when a message is sent? I used yahoo messenger in my other office and we all were just very, very careful about what we wrote. Does UPdox refresh and signal new messages as soon as they are sent?

That is correct - you'll get a little Red circle like you'll see in a mobile device when there is a new message. Refreshing will show you all the messages.

There's lots of great, free options out there. IPMSG, BorgChat, etc. that people use on the board. We use LAN Messenger ( http://sourceforge.net/projects/lanmsngr/) in house. Works on Windows, Mac, and Linux. Installation is also simple.

IPMSG is the one I use. Borgchat is good too. Sandeep's looks rather high tech. It's funny because before I found IPMSG, I used about ten others. And, everyone would work for about two weeks, then they forgot what a LAN was.
IPMSG just works. Never lost a message. It won't notify you, but it isn't that type of messenger. It isn't a Yahoo-like window where you could come back to the computer and not see a message. Every message opens on the screen.
But side notes says it costs $170 for workstations and around $250 for company grade. Unless there is a free one.

The way I read Side Notes is it is $170 per work group which can be up to 200 users but I could be wrong.
I doubt Google Chat would pass the hospital's strict interpretation of HIPPA.
I looked at IPMSG but would like to have one that popped up or in some way notified users of a new message

IPMSG does pop up. In fact, you would have to be blind to miss it.

The HIPAA police may not want the mobile component. IF they pay your way to San Diego, I'm willing to give them some time to start the implementation.

I would be willing to foot the $170 just to be able to message my staff to get me out of a room so I can go poop!

on a side note FOr messaging between my NPs about patients I have switched to Wickr (free app available on Iphones and android platform) I have encouraged my physisians, I often text about patient care with to also sign up. Does not have a desktop application. They claimAES 256 encrypted with Military grade encryption. HIPPA compliant NSA suite B compliance (whatever that means) Messages autodestruct after a certain time and on no servers
