After having gone through all the possible permutations and combinations of servers and operating systems, I have decided to stall and see if the AC can come up with a pricing structure that would make the cloud a viable option. I just upgraded to fiber optic and hope to have enough speed to handle the load. It won't be long before having a server in house is an obsolete notion. It would be great if Amazing Charts could lead the charge on this. It would undoubtedly decrease headaches for them and they could reduce Guardian angels. It would also add a much needed revenue stream. It is prohibitively expensive at the moment so I am sure not a lot of us have moved in that direction but I am hopeful they will see the light and reduce the cost so it is actually a possibility for us.

That's an interesting notion. We have two opposing forces clashing though. Processing demands in the SMB line are pretty much at or below today's hardware processing abilities, meaning you can now get a lot more time out your existing hardware. Cloud was sort of predicated on the idea that servers would need to be recycled every 2-3 years due to increasing processing requirements driving people to the cloud. But, in reality, processing demand has started to stabilize at least in small business roles. Even people on this forum are running three or four VMs on a single Core i7.
I don't know what the future will entail, but the idea about desktops disappearing also seems questionable. Many firms are taking it as a fact. 5-Year-old kids are able to master the iPhone/iPad nowadays so I don't know how long this "easy-to-use" craze will last. So either they will stay at that level their entire life or we will have a lot more power users around.

Bill, I think AC has heard our concerns with cost of the cloud. Hang in there as there is a rumor that they are considering a better cost option. There are other hosting options also. Best for your practice is a great option with Indy. I agree that I do not want to deal with servers and back up issues any more! I am willing to pay extra for someone else to manage my data. I have tested the cloud option and with cable once logged in I have not noted any speed concerns.

Is the Cloud already using Version 7? Double entry of demographics is burdensome.

Vicki,
I think that AC is always using the most current release that is time tested. I don't think you will find versions such as v7 on the cloud if not available for the earth. The advantage of the cloud is the seamless integration of new updates that you will not have to worry about installing. I do not think that AC will want to upload a beta version that may have significant issues that all cloud users would have to deal with.
So, I think you answer is no.
