As a newbie, it is frustrating to have Search be so limited. Often posts more than 6 months old are gone to us.
There are more than 5000 threads listed, but you can't read them. If you do a search, you may get almost 10 threads if you are lucky.
I have used enough forums to be frustrated by this limitation.
Would love to know why.
An then an "old-timer" will post a link to an old thread... Wish I could do that

Dan,
You can use the Advanced search feature to set a date range of up to 5 years.
I used this a lot when I started with AC to find information.

I always use Advanced. I always set for newer than 5 years. I still get the most recent 100 items, which is 3-6 months worth of posts.
I would appreciate it if you see if you can get anything from 2011.
Thanks,

The search function here is in fact terrible. I won't waste your time enumerating my reasons for saying so. One example: since every post with a search word is included in the results, a single long thread may "use up" half of your 100 search results. If nothing else, the function leads to a lot of wasted time. As Donna says and you are doing, use the "Advanced" feature and select "newer than 5 years". If the 100 results are all too recent, note the date of the oldest one and search again with "newer than 5 years" and "older than..." the date of the oldest post in your initial search.

Yes, I completely agree that it is cumbersome. With tricks like Jon has noted for the dates, and trying to change the search terms, I was able to extract a lot of useful information to teach me about AC, but it was very time consuming.
If it is too difficult, feel free to post any question, and if it has been previously discussed, one of the "old timers" may be able to locate the thread more quickly.

You could always use Google to search the board. You just need to add filters. For example: "Hardware Acceleration Fix site:http://amazingcharts.com/ub/" Google You can also add modifiers for dates or excluding certain words etc.

Thanks for the ideas
I haven't used the "older than" function, and Google is interesting

Unfortunately, most of my great posts are just after five years.

I have saved the URLs to useful posts so I can look them up when a question is posted. We really need stickies for several topics.

I don't think the Internet was around then. Al Gore was still in kindergarten.

If the search function was better, I could provide links to John suggesting stickies from 2,3,4,5, and 6 years ago. Also, links to me bitching about the search function at the same intervals.

That's hilarious. Maybe there should be a forum for witty posters.

Hey San Fran. Just because you can't hold better than we can, don't complain about it.
