Hi,
The topic of Dragon Naturally Speaking is a bit cloudy for us. Amazing Charts works *only* with the medical version of Dragon Naturally Speaking - is this correct?

Not only Amazing Charts. Dragon Medical Practice Edition (at $1,500+) is the only version of Nuance's dictation software that works with any EMR.

Wow - so Nuance can pick and choose applications that it doesn't want to interface with Dragon Naturally Speaking...
That's more than a little annoying.

A little annoying is Nuance picking and choosing applications...demanding that doctors pay an additional $1500 to dictate into our software, when other professionals (e.g. lawyers) do not... yeah, that is more than a little annoying.

Interesting development, if anyone uses a Mac to access Amazing Charts via LogMeIn, version 2 of Dragon Mac still works fine to dictate into Amazing Charts remotely ( I am using it now). I'm not sure whether the newest (version 3) of Dragon Mac will work, but if I upgrade, I will post back.
There is a medical version of Dragon Mac (MacSpeech Medical), but I guess the user base is too small to lockout the standard Dragon Mac versions from dictating into an EMR.
There is a smile on my face -- Nuance and its plans for world domination of computer voice dictation foiled again!

Okay, so has anyone tried installing version 10 of the Dragon software, then installing the medical dictionaries that are available on Ebay, etc.?

I would be interested to hear the answer to GoBruins question, though my impression is that the medical dictionaries are of minimal value. It is often surprising how many medical terms the standard dictionaries seem to contain.
I am getting squeezed now in trying to work with Dragon. I had been using V9 on my office computer running Win7, 32 bit. Now my new machine is still Win7, but is 64 bit....so V9 is no longer compatible. And of course my V11 won't dictate into AC. Looks like my only choice is to use Logmein from another machine to log onto the computer that is right on my desk, so I can use one of the above versions. A little mind-bending and far from optimal. Any other suggestions (besides forking over the $$$ for the medical version)?

I did some preliminary testing with a fresh demo install of AC and Dragon Naturally Speaking Preferred version 10. It looks like version 10 has been crippled as well for use in EMR's.

What are user experiences for speed/usability for Dragon medical version 11.5? One of our laptops is a Dell that is about 3 years old: Dual core CPU, 4GB of RAM, Windows 7 Pro 32-bit, SSD drive.

Hi Jon, We are in exactly the same situation, I have been using Dragon Preferred 9.5 on a WinXPPro machine. The days of this setup are numbered, slower and slower.... Just as you said, the older Dragon will not work on Win7 64 bit. The newer Dragon will not work with AC. So I have resigned myself to having to purchase Dragon Medical. Eventually. However, I am a bit concerned that Medical v12 may some problems of its own... http://amazingcharts.com/ub/ubbthre.../1/Dragon_12_Does_Not_Work_With_R#UNREADGene

Yes, 9.5 is the most recent version that will work with an EMR. BUT 9.5 or earlier will NOT work on a 64 bit operating system. Gene

Medical version 11.5 will work on both 32 & 64-bit version of Win 7 Pro. I was using it on a Dell Dimension E520 desktop with 32-bit Win 7 Pro, 4GB RAM & Core2Duo chip and I felt it was slower than version 10. I upgraded to a computer with i5 CPU, 10 GB RAM, 64-bit Win 7 (and made a new speech profile as recommended), and there was prompter speech to text time & much improved accuracy.

Probably one would recoup $1500 pretty fast -- transcription isn't cheap. V12 Preferred seems a lot more accurate than V11.5 -- if I get the medical, it will be after they come out with V12 medical. For now, I just dictate into a "remote" machine using Dragon on my "local" machine. Clumsy, but it works.

I suppose we will wait until version 12 as well. It's not so much the price, but the principal. But I suppose it's a matter of perspective.
Thanks everyone.

I am still using Dragon 9.5 Preferred on a Windows XP 32 bit. The accuracy is okay. Working with numbers can be frustating. For example, if I want to say that the Hemoglobin A1c has decreased from 7 to 6, Dragon will often interpret this as 726. For those who want to use the most up to date version of Dragon without paying for the medical version there is the option of dictating to the Dragon Pad then copying and pasting. A cumbersome method but you avoid paying the big bucks.

It's not so much the price, but the principal. Agreed. Well, its the price, too. If the product was $250, I could more easily bend my principles.
