Good morning,
I'm trying to upgrade from V4 to V6.3.3 and I'm having difficulty because I get an "unexpected error" and the SQL installation fails. The installer keeps working, but then when I click on AC to get it open, I get the set up screen to find the database, but it can't find it. I click OK, I see a folder with the database in it, I click, but it tells me that I need to have the SQL server installed and to download the AC installer so I can install the SQL (which is what I had just done). I've made sure to run the installation as an administrator, turn off the antivirus, and turn off the UAC, to no avail. What should I do next? I'm on a Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit computer. Thanks for any help! Dr. B
Thanks!

I would try uninstalling AC, rebooting and trying once more installing as an administrator. I do think there is something on the website that you will have to do one extra tuner if installing from a version that old....you will have to look. If all else fails talk with someone like Bert who I think has archive of many versions and try upgrading to an interim version first. If this is your active machine and it will prevent you from using it Monday - call Guardian support and leave emergency message they will get in touch with you and help you.

First Step: Upgrade to the Professional Version of Windows. You will never get what you want out of the Home version.
Second Step if the First Step Fails: Send a private message to Indy. Be sure to have completed the first step. Indy, along with myself and others, do not support the Home version of Windows. At all.

Thanks. I upgraded to Pro but this didn't work. After much tinkering, I figured out the problem was with folder permissions. Then the installation went well without a problem, but now I'm having a new problem: I get the Eyeglass Tech Guy telling me about connecting to the SQL Service, I try to do the 4 steps, Firewall is OK, SQL port is OK, but on the 3rd step it tells me that it can't close the SQL service.
What do I do now?
Thanks!
PS: this is my home computer, where I try out all these things before I even try to do it on the office computers, I'd rather do this on a weekend with time to figure it out than panicking during a day when I have patients to see and running into these problems.

First, if possible, if you could add a signature with your first name and possibly what you do and where you are located. It is just difficult to respond to hb60md. Thanks.
While permissions are many times a problem, I don't know why it would cause a problem during install. Also, while the Pro or Ultimate version is always better, this is more an issue when trying to connect to a domain or even a P2P and not installing things to it. I doubt that Home Premium would be the issue, but I suppose it is moot given you have upgraded.
The guy in the glasses is usually not much help. The error message seems rather clear. It can't close the SQL service. While that would seem to be a good thing, e.g. you would want it running, the fact that it can't be stopped and started would be a telltale issue.
At least try the following: Go the Run window by clicking on Run on the Start menu. Once there, type in "services.msc" You will now have all of your services in a window.
So, I guess I would start by restarting SQL(AMAZINGCHARTS)service by using Restart. I am not sure why this wouldn't fix itself with a reboot, but try it anyway and see if you are successful.

Thanks, but it didn't work. You probably don't remember me, Bert, but you were kind enough to help me about 2 years ago with the same problem. At the time, you were very insistent that I upgrade my main computer from Vista to Win 7 which I did, but it didn't solve the problem. After much tinkering the problem was solved but it's been so long I don't remember the details. But because it seems that for me, upgrading is a nightmare, I have delayed doing so as much as possible. So, I took the advice this time to upgrade from the Home to the Pro version, but not surprisingly, it didn't work. I'm doing this on my home computer because there's no way I would even dare to try this at the office without knowing that the problem can be solved. So I'm planning to make an appointment with Guardian Angel, explaining the situation, but I wish there was an easier way to upgrade without going through all of this, since I don't know what exactly is wrong. If it's not the operating system, then what is? I never seem to have this kind or problem with other programs. Thanks again, for your help!

Other programs are basically the same program as previous with added functionality, which can simply install over the previous program. It installs files and folders and updates the registry, all of this behind the scenes. With AC, you are installing a new version AND a new database. This requires the old database that is restored to be tuned to fit the new database. This makes it a bit more difficult.
As you probably know, without bragging too much, I am halfway decent with computers, but even so, I only upgrade when I absolutely have to. But, only after backing up the whole computer, all of AC, all of SQL, and, of course, the AC backup. I back that up three times just in case there is some corruption.
While waiting for tech support, my recommendation would be to make a backup, uninstall SQL via Programs, uninstall AC via Your Uninstaller 7 using the Level 4 backup. I don't know why everyone feels the need to post that Revo is better. But, they will. I would then reinstall until you have AC up and running. Hopefully, SQL will install again. Then restore, and you should be set. If that fails, do a system restore to a point behind when you started the new install. You should ALWAYS make a restore point and name it what you are doing like Install AC. Hey, you have a 50 / 50 chance of its working. I have no idea how Microsoft can't get that right, when GoBack used to get it right 99.99% of the time.

Lol Revo may or may not be better. It is however free. Lol. They also have a free 30 day trial which is nice.
I noticed you mentioned something about the permissions. Does it say something about not being able to connect to the server. Lists 3 things, e.g. port 61067 and two other things but the port is open?

Sandeep, It tells me: There was an error connecting to the SQL Server Service, usually due to the Windows Firewall blocking this program. Try the tricks above, or restarting Amazing Charts again. If none of these work, contact technical support at http://amazingcharts.com/support/help-me-now/.So when I try to use the eyeglass guy, he goes through steps 1 and 2, including the port number 6107, but when clicking on step 3, it tells me that it couldn't close the SQL service, probably because the computer is doing something else, to give it some time and try again (which does't work). This isn't a network issue since it's my home computer i'm trying to do this, again to make sure I can figure out how to solve these problems before trying the office computers. Speaking of office computers, I also have a decision to make. My main computer is a Windows 7 Pro, that's where the database resides. I have 2 other computers, a very ancient and slow XP and a Vista Home premium which works fine, other than going through network problems when upgrading. So, do I shell out $200 bucks each to upgrade them, just one of them and buy a new one? What about Windows 8, should I wait until then and upgrade or buy then? Thanks!

Can you post a screenshot using the PrintScreen (Prt Sc) button on your keyboard and pasting it into paint or another image editor?
This is the main computer at home correct?
If it's slow on XP, it'll probably be even slower on 7. So I'd upgrade that one. If the Home Premium works fine, it should run a little bit faster on 7 since 7 is better with resource utilization.
Windows 8 is an interesting interface. Personally, I'm not a fan of them trying to remove the start bar. It has been in every version of Windows I've used. But the biggest issue is that SQL2005 Express, which AC uses is incompatible, with Windows 8. So I would avoid that. If you buy now and AC does decide to upgrade it. They do have an upgrade program which lets you get Win 8 for $15 or something. Personally, I'd get the Win 7 and then save the Win 8s for future use. I already have the RTM Version of it. Should hit the shelves late October.

Sandeep,
I have read about the incompatibility as well. But, you should be able to install SQL on 7 and then use 8s for the clients. Or, better yet, install on a server.

Your Uninstaller 7 is free as well. Very few software programs in that price range don't come with a trial version.

Has to be Server 2008R2 or older. With just 3 computers I'm not sure it's worth it. That's what I meant about Windows 8. Also, it's not on AC's hardware and OS requirements. Which means they could deny support for that. They probably wouldn't, but they could.

I haven't used Your Uninstaller so I'll leave that to you. I believe both create restore points and backup the registry which is good in case something goes wrong.

No brainer. Ditch the two computers and buy new ones with WIN 7 Pro. I haven't tried WIN 8, although I have 10 licenses. I would likely want touchscreens.
What is going on with the SQL. Haven't heard. I could log in. Maybe fix it again. Or Raja. But, you need to do one or the other.

I have 2 touch screens in the exam rooms with Ergotron Arms. Much better than an iPad. I should post a picture. I'm gonna do some testing before I switch them over to Win 8.
