So being from SW Washington it is about as far away from DC as you can get - anyone familiar and willing to advise - looks like rates from here to there are about 300 if I fly to Dulles, but up to 500 if I fly to Reagan. How do I get from Dulles to the convention hotel (cost and how)? Just figuring some would know.

Steven,

Dulles is really not very convenient to downtown DC.
You might check rates to Baltimore Washington International (BWI). It is easy to get to Union Station in DC (walking distance to hotel) from BWI via light rail/train.
Chime in here if that is not right, Jon, since I do tend to be directionally challenged.

Hi Steven,

Donna is absolutely right about Dulles not being a convenient airport for DC. But it is not impossible to get there via public transportation. The trip would take about an hour and would involve a bus and two metro trains that would bring you to Union Station (5 minute walk or short cab ride to the Hyatt). Here is a link for the DC Metro system (http://www.wmata.com/). You can use the trip planner to plot your trip from Dulles Airport to Union Station, it will cost around $8.00 each way.

Hope this helps!

How about flying to DCA-Ronald Reagan Washington National instead?

You basically have three airport choices. Reagan (National, DCA), Dulles (IAD), and Baltimore-Washington International (BWI).
Reagan is closest and most convenient to the hotel.
BWI is further away, but is a Southwest hub and tends to have the cheapest prices. We love Southwest because they don't charge for luggage, and because changing or cancelling flights is free. As Donna says, getting from BWI to the Hyatt is pretty easy and cheap; there is a commuter train from the airport to Union Station which is a few blocks from the hotel. The train is about $7.
Dulles also tends to have relatively cheap flights (SW goes there, too). It is a pain to get downtown from there. As Josephine describes, it is inexpensive but time consuming, especially if you have luggage. A couple of transfers are involved. Another choice is the Supershuttle. It will take you in a van, door-to-door from the airport to the hotel. Price should be about $29 one way. If you are travelling with others, it is an especially good choice since additional passengers are about $10.
So, Steven,... a lot comes down to the actual cost savings to fly into a more distant airport...and your stomach for hauling your luggage around.

Sounds like Reagan is the best bet and I have been watching and it looks like Southwest is not a bad price and allows 2 bags.......hope to see people there

I was hoping for more of the reverse Oregon Trail experience. With stops along the way - no TSA probe.
