Nice article, Wendell. Congrats.
"Wheeler now has more time for patients and says he feels less stressed." ...but when did Wendell EVER feel stressed?

Wendell,
That's pretty cool!!!! Nice article. I am currently using one laptop as my exam rooms are quite dinky, and putting in a workstation would be difficult at best. I also use UPDOX and one frustrating and inefficient problem I have is having to sign on to my laptop to print up a scheduled drug to fax through UPDOX when in the exam room. I suspect having the IPAD in the room remoted to your SQL (I am assuming this is what you are doing) would take the signing on and off UPDOX out of the equation. I already have two users assigned elsewhere, so I suppose I could make another user for my laptop as myself. But the main question I have for you, are you using the IPAD pretty much with each encounter and not using a workstation or laptop?? And if so does that work out well for you??

Gee, it makes me seem high tech or something, Aww Shucks. Actually I only use the iPhone, I'm a poor pediatrician who can't afford an iPad, maybe I can borrow one from Bert

Jimmie, I am not sure I understand the issue with your controlled substance prescriptions. Can you describe it in more detail? Are you saying that you are signed into Updox in your office, then when you go into the exam room, you need to sign into AC on the laptop, write a prescription, and then open Updox to fax it from there? If you are not using that 3rd Updox user, that would be an easy solution. But what is the laptop connected to (network, internet, wired or wireless; how does it connect to AC)?

Jon,
Yes to all your questions, but I have a 3rd user with one of my billing gals out in our front office. But I don't have a problem unless it is robitussin with codiene, ambien or hydrocodone. that is when I have to open up Updox on my laptop to make those go through. laptop is connected wireless to my PC in office functioning as SQL server. thanks.

Have you thought of using logmein on the desktop to remote to your own PC from the exam room? That way you will not have to enter AC twice (once from each machine) and you will already have the note open when you log in. You also avoid any issues with opening two versions of the note (one on each machine). When you write a controlled prescription, you are writing it from your own PC, and can just print it to Updox and fax from there (without opening Updox again).

Jon,
Excellent idea, thanks for your help, after I remember my password that is what I am going to do, I really appreciate your quick response. I think this will alleviate some speed issues as well. Have you thought about the emu?

Wendell,
How do you connect your iPhone (or in my case, and iPad) to AC? Do you use LogMein?

Jon,
Just wanted to give you feedback--the log me in idea was great!! So as long as my internet stays up, I am in good shape, but has eliminated the issues otherwise.

Melanie I use both LMI and AC on call app. AC on call works well, but since I have 2 offices with different databases, it only covers one of them. The other I use LMI, but it is slower and somewhat clunky to use.

AC on call is the iPhone, iPad app. It will initially sync with your system (must be done wirelessly) and will hold all of your patients. There is a problem with it updating the patient information. While you can write notes and it will download them on a subsequent sync, it does not update notes and new patients as it should. AC is aware and working on this. The only way to fix this is deinstall and reinstall. Initial sync can take about 30 minutes. Overall, it works well. Go to iTunes and see the program also try this one: http://amazingcharts.com/the-ehr/product-tour/working-off-site/There is an initial charge of $24.95 Completely different interface from AC, but quite simple and functional. You can pull up all old notes and demographic data. You cannot prescribe. You can write notes that are saved and when resynced will come to your inbox to include similar to a forwarded note would.
