Anyone out there have any plans for an underground tornado shelter? Vickie, Jim...I know you understand what I am talking about. Usually I am a sarcastic, cynical, say-it-like-it-is kind of gal but this last Friday really broke my heart. As many of you undoubtedly heard, Southern Indiana was devastated by a series of tornadoes. Three of them touched down within 10-20 miles of my farm. I have many, many patients in Henryville. A 2 year old girl was found in a field that I drive by twice a day. Her family was all killed. She lived long enough for her grandmother to have to make the decision to take her off life-support. I feel so fortunate that not so much as a shingle was blown off my house. But, it reminds me to take the time to thank all of my friends here on the ACUB for the many, many years of camaraderie, jokes, laughter and technical assistance given free gratis. I also want to thank those of you who so adeptly pointed out the pornography in a recent post of mine. Without you, Lysistrata's hand would have simply been resting on a piece of wood.

Dear Leslie,
Our hearts go out to everyone struck by the tornados in Indiana and other states. Here in central Massachusetts our area was hit with tornadoes for the first time in 100 years last summer. One of my patients was killed and many lost their homes. I see the swath of destruction every day on my way to/from work. Tornadoes are such strange tragedies. One friend lost his house and 100feet down the road another didn't even lose the tomato plants in his garden. I hope your area gets the help it needs to deal with the crisis and recover.
With best wishes, John

Leslie, My thoughts are with you as well, growing up in Franklin, Indiana, knowing all too well what living in a tornado prone area is like-- My father currently lives in New Albany--so this past week for me as well has been extremely stressfull. But thankfully he did not have a shingle blown off as well--jimmie

Jimmie,
Thanks. Small world that your father is in New Albany. I would rather be in Montana

Leslie, I am so sorry I didn't even realize how close this was for you. I am glad you and yours are unscathed, and my thoughts and prayers for your neighbors and patients. Tornadoes seem so senseless and frightening. I prefer our threat of "the really big one" earthquake to come, but never is, compared to the awful reality of a tornado every year.

When I read of things like tornados and hurricanes, I realize how sheltered we are up here. I really have no concept of what it would be like to be at the mercy of something so powerful and impersonal. You have my admiration and condolences.

Leslie, Montana has its advantages, but if you don't mind the possibility of snow most every month out of the year and incessant wind--it ain't too bad. Keeps the "Californians" away as they say around here--sorry Martin--jimmie

My heart goes out to those affected by the tornados. I'm glad to hear that your farm was OK.
And the spring is just beginning. Global warming at it's finest.

Leslie, Tragic events like this really are a reminder to all of us to stop, slow down, and be grateful. We get so caught up in our daily gripes and aggravations that we all lose sight of how fortunate we are. I am glad you were spared, and feel tremendous sadness for those affected. I think it is hard to imagine this kind of devastation.
I, too, am thankful for this user board, and all of you who have so kindly assisted me. And, yes, amused me too!
I was telling a friend about Lyistrata, and he informed me that his (Jesuit) University just put on a performance of Lysistrata with the appropriate costumes and appendages. Not just our board going pornographic with the classics!

Oh I feel so much better, Donna!! Even though my research revealed (remember David was the one that started all of this) that it was a classic I thought maybe the story belonged in the pages of the comisutra! The tornado victims are beginning to get things cleaned up. A patient of mine was in today (her house had minor damage but no electricity or water so she took a shower here in my office before I saw her)says that they would be much further along if the press, the roofers and contractors looking for jobs and the gawkers would get out of there. The biggest request for goods....shoes and pillows. Also gasoline to run their generators.

Hi Leslie, The biggest request for goods....shoes and pillows. Also gasoline to run their generators. I have a bunch of basketball shoes in a garbage bag. I'll be more than happy to shipped them to you. Provide me the shipping address and I'll shipped those shoes ASAP. All they need is a good washing. A couple of pair are still somewhat new. My prayers are with you and your home state of Indiana.

Well, my faith in the American Spirit lives on. A patient of mine who lost everything in the recent tornadoes just checked in. She was talking about how people in Ohio have been mailing stuff of hers that they found there. The patient I had just finished with overheard her. The tornado victim started to pay her copay (remember it is against the law for me to not charge the copay . I would however have written it off as a bad debt) )when the the other patient took out her wallet and said, "Here, let me pay it for you." All of us started crying!

WOW! That is a cool and heartwarming experience. 95% to 99 % of people are pretty decent. It's nice to see such acts of compassion.
