We are again at that cycle time where we need to start switching out older/slower desktops/laptops in the exam rooms. We have main server(s) running Windows 2003R2 with fast Quad Core processer and lots of RAM, approx 35 computers for office staff, exam rooms (12) and use VPN to remote in from two other offices.

Currently using AC V5.029 and plan on upgrading very soon to newest version once out of beta. I would like to be slightly miserly on purchasing laptops but also need speed and RAM, I believe, in order to efficiently run printing and e-prescribing from the exam room. On our older slower machines both logging in/starting up, printing and using Rx module are painfully slow.

Recommendations on processor, RAM and any ideas on good value brands, outlet stores, etc appreciated. We planned on running Win 7 Pro on laptops which I understand should be fine with W2003R2.

Best,

This may or may not fit your use case, but I would at least consider using Samsung Chromebooks.
[Love Samsung Glass]

Low cost @ $350, supports larger display later that can be wall/swivel mounted, instant on, much less security/maintenance issues, and since the app doesn't reside locally, upgrades become more manageable for all those locations. In the event of theft or loss, replacement time is far easier. If you are used to using it on other devices, it supports multi-touch gestures and a webcam/integrated camera [documenting, tele-presence medicine, etc].

You can use wireless, or attach a USB NIC.

James, just a thought, depending on how many of those 35 computers you are replacing. It seems it would make sense to upgrade your servers as well to SBS 2011 Standard or just Windows Server 2008 R2 if you are't an SBS man. smile

Bert,
I believe upgrade requires a clean install which would not make this a seamless or inexpensive migration

I guess you would have to decide that. I suppose if I were going to completely upgrade my network, I would do clean installs of my servers. But, it depends on how many of the 35 computers you are talking about.

Not sure why laptops vs desktops. Since you already have monitors (or are the already laptops?) replacing the desktop would be cheaper than laptop. See Sandeeps recent posts about what's the best desktop.

I will accept Indy's recommendation as I don't know enough about laptops to give a definitive opinion.
