I awould like a report to show how many new patients joined the practice over a period of time. and I would also like to break down the list in age groups.
Can I do this?

I know you can make a report using demographics to give you age groups. For example all patients >1 year of age and < 5 years of age.

Not sure how you would do a search for new patients who have joined your practice. Not sure that is possible

The patient ID numbers assigned by AC to new patients are created sequentially. Kind of a low tech approach, but go back and figure out the ID number of the patient added at the beginning of the interval you want to look at. (In other words, if you want your report to include all patients since 1/1/11, look at the schedule on that date and pick the first new patient).

Create a report using the ID identified in the step above (the first criteria is "Demographics...ID... >__").

Then use additional queries as Marty suggests to filter your list.

I like Jon's approach the patient numbers are probably the easiest way.

I tried another way, but it didn't work ("Another is to look for CPTs 9939% (% is a wildcard, but does not always work.) This will give you new patients
Then go to schedule and <12 months since seen." Gave me patients who had a 99381 at anytime, and couldn't use %)

The patient's expectation is that you have all the answers, sometimes they just don't like the answer you have for them

Thanks for your suggestions.
I am planning to place a coded line of letters or numbers on the first line of the hpi that can be used to search in the report; sort of a 'for office use only: '
