If you are going to pay, I recommend Sophos. Disclosure-we do resell them. We starting using them in the enterprise space where they are a big player as they are displacing Norton/McAfee. In medium to large installations, I find their management tools, end-user performance impacts, threat update speed, and prevention rate to be superior to the other SMB options.
If you are looking for free, I'm sure some folks will weigh in for that perspective.

Free - Microsoft Security Essentials. Great for small networks of only a few PC's (no servers).
Paid - Sophos or Trend Micro. Great for larger networks that have servers.
Avoid Symantec and McAffe at all costs.

Does anyone have any suggestions for Anti-Virus on the server (running MS Server 2008 R2 STD)? Is it even needed on the server? Thanks

I was told by AC support and have personal experience that security essentials interferes with AC even if added to the exceptions list. I had to spend several hours with tech support as AC would not start and windows installer kept reconfiguring windows - there is a previous communication fro AC how to fix this so I use AVG with which I Have had good results , but if Sophos or microtrend are better maybe I should try them. Any idea of the cost ? thanks Bala

Probably just a W7 system running AVG and acting as a server on a peer-to-peer network.

I'm thinking of installing Symantec Endpoint Protection 12 on our server (running Windows Server 2008 R2 STD). Any suggestions on how to configure it so that it doesn't block access from office computers or AC?
OR ... is there a better option for anti-virus protection for the server (actual server)
Thanks

I use AVG paid version licences for 10 computers for about $ 60 per yr but my'server' is a PC , so not sure how it would work on a real server . at one time I was running both security essentials and AVG as the combo proved superior in eliminating viruses but since they both scan all files they often flag identity protection files , labcorp and AC files as viruses, so had to turn off identity protection and add AC as exceptions. I have heard from others that Avira is a good free program to use bala

I use AVG Business for the server and the individual PC's and it works fine. We just disable the firewall function on the individual PC's since it will interfere with communicating with the server. We have a hardware firewall in our router (Fortinet). I also use Malwarebytes (Corporate version)as another layer of security and for the most part have not had any difficulty with AC and this setup.

There are so many good ones out there. I run ESET. I would never use Symantec/Norton or McAfee.
There may be others, but Malwarebytes Pro coupled with Malwarebytes SBE, is the only one that can detect and block Cryptolocker, maybe the worse virus/trojan ever. The ransoms have gone up to $2,000.
I am still running the Pro versions on all clients. I plan on calling MBAM tomorrow about the difference between that and the SBE.

Keep in mind that it is not Best Practices to just install an AV program on a server. There are quite a few files which need to be excluded. It is fairly straightforward, although tedious, but given you have support, you can ask them to do it for you. Exchange Server is one area that has many files which must be excluded.
Some people run their servers without AV, keeping their clients up to date and not using their servers for anything but servers.

This server is only used as a server. Backing up to AC is the only off-site action. No internet surfing, etc.

Then maybe you don't need AV. I still feel better using one, although I went for quite a while without one.
