I would like to announce to the AC community that a new third party ?Letter Writer for Amazing Charts? tool is in development (Phase 2). Over the last three months I?ve been in ?Design and Analysis? mode (Phase 1). I?ve been in communications with AC user board respected doctors; Bert, Jon (JBS), and Wendell (Wendell365), by way of private messaging (PM).
I?d like to thank those doctors for contributing their vital input and critiques. I?m grateful for their shared input and support. I couldn?t have done this without effective communication from those doctors. From what I?m told, Dr. Bertman is aware of what I?m doing. Although, I have not personally talked to him; I can only hope he is in agreement. Thank you to those doctors who mentioned me at the Tahoe retreat, last month.
This new Letter Writer will be Free for all to use. I?ve decided not to put a price on the third party Letter Writer, but will accept donations for development cost. To show your support I have created a website: Letter Writer Project for Amazing Charts. There you will find project information and material on the new Letter Writer.
I?ll provide additional information as I progress. You could always check the "Letter Writer Project for Amazing Charts" website for completed deliverables. I look forward to earning your support on this project. Thank you all.
Thank you. You may need to install ?MS .Net Framework 3.5? in order to run the prototype. Check to see if it?s installed already (go to Add/Remove Programs to check). If not, you could download it here. Let me know what happens after you have installed the framework, or if you have the ?MS .Net Framework 3.5? installed.
Unfortunately, Dragon Naturally Speaking isn?t going to be in this release. I already have my software schedule set for the 1st version. I?ll definitely keep Dragon in mind for version 2 if I get enough support for this version.
I recently did some rework on the prototype and forgot to include a file. That's why it wouldn't run or work. My fault. Good catch Dr. Grauman. The prototype should run on Windows 7 PCs now. All can download the corrected prototype from the website below my signature.
I would like to give more clarity on the purpose of a software prototype. It is Not suppose to be a fully functional product. Its purpose is to show mock up screens (with minimal navigation) of what the final product is going to look like and flow. An example of this would be a Spec (model) Home. We know that a Spec Home gives a home buyer the opportunity to view the style (inside and out) with limitations of a house, before he/she buys, or build their final house.
I have created short video that demonstrates the LW prototype. Some probably have already tried to input data into the screens and nothing happened, like with the ?Welcome? and ?Login? screens. That?s okay. Nothing is supposed to happen on the ?Welcome? screen. Just click the ?Finish? or ?Cancel? to show the ?Login? screen. I should have visibly provided the community with the username: mickey and password: 123456 for the prototype?s Login screen.
I did provide the information in the ?Prototype Overview.pdf? thinking that would suffice. But, I?m learning more and more as I go. Here?s the sample video:
Try it out on your PCs, and see if you get the same/similar result from the video. Let me know what happens.
Yes, assuming it links to patients and the consultant list in AC, saves to chart, and works as it seems, this will be great. Questions: Can the letter be edited after it is saved? Where will it be saved (In imported items or separately?) Can we easily tell from within a patient chart note that one or more letters has been generated for this patient if they are not saved in imported items? Will it save a signature stamp?

Yes, it will link (interface) to AC?s patients, consultant, and more. Yes, a letter (document) can be edited after it has been saved to a desired location. Yes, you?ll be able to open a saved letters and edit them, according to format (.txt, .rtf, and .doc) extensions. The primary format will be .RTF. This tool will be flexible with its saving mechanism. It will save documents like any other standard word processor. You will be able to save your letters any where you like, as long it?s not saved directly into AC?s II folder.
The beauty with this tool is you?ll be able to transfer saved letters (documents), or the current letter into AC?s imported Items, for a selected patient. That?s where all the magic is going to happen. This means that you wouldn?t even have to write a letter using the tool, but use it to transfer saved letters into a patient?s imported items in AC.
Once a patient?s letter(s) are transferred, a message box will display to indicate a success to their (the patient?s) imported items. And, then within AC, with a refresh of the patient, the doctor should be able to see the new imported items for that patient. This is to give an idea of how the tool should flow.
@Dr.Grauman - BTW, Dr. Grauman, you have access to Donors Download (on the website ) to view all design documents and time tracking. You should have seen a page with a password after you?ve donated. Let me know if you didn?t see it, or get it?
Please (Dr. Grauman), when you get a chance (maybe a weekend when you're not so busy) download the ?Use Cases. pdf.? It describes every task of use for this tool.
For everyone else (lurkers included), remember, this tool is going to be free; the donations are for time, support, and resources (development cost). Feel free to donate if your heart is touched by the worked produced. I'm hoping to earn more supporters. Thank you all.
The AC letter writer is awful. The most cursory search of the postings on this board shows a really huge number of posts panning this part of the program, and virtually no supporters.
I think the application Lawrence is developing shows a great deal of promise. When it is finished, we will be able to create letters in AC that are the equal of, say, E-clinicalworks. That is, they will look like they are written by professionals and not intellectually challenged middle-schoolers.
Software development is not for idiots, and a lot of time is involved. If everyone that has taken the time to post their displeasure with the AC letterwriter contributed to Lawrence's effort, we might really make a giant leap upward in terms of a professional EMR. I would challenge you all to do so.

David, I'm there. The letter writer will particularly improve the value of AC for specialists. I would suggest that it would be worthwhile for all specialists who use AC to make some contribution to facilitate this development.
