Hi Kevin,

I am not sure I understand what you are trying to do. I have to admit I know nothing of Citrix' application servers, although they are probably rather pricey.

But, why is Windows Server 2003, 2008 or SBS servers not application servers? What product by Microsoft are you specifically referring to?

I think he's talking about TS Remote Web Applications not the Application Server Role in Windows Server. It's kind like a mini remote desktop for one program except it's virtualized. Someone here uses TS Remote Web Apps with Amazing Charts. This means it'll work on most operating systems as the actual program is not being installed.

Based on several factors, we are evaluating TSPlus in out hosted environment as an alternative to Windows RDC; there are several potential benefits to their solution over vanilla RDC.

If there is interest, I can report back our conclusions once we have completed our evaluation, just post here or private message.

I use TS Web Apps and they work OK sometimes they get hung up or the user can see the program minimized but are not able to open Amazing Charts I just kill them in TS Manager and they are all set.

I'm thinking that there might be some performance improvement using an application server as opposed to RDP. Plus you only have to update one computer for new versions. The application server in Windows 2008 looks pretty complicated and oriented to web applications as opposed to virtual applications. Still reading the manuals as that one is included in the Windows Server. XenApp looks simpler but I still can't figure out how much it would cost as it involves TS Cals and their own licensing. Neo is the "TS Web Apps" the server included with Windows? Was it hard to set up?

Found it - TS Remote Apps - included with Windows 2008 Std Server - http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc753844(WS.10).aspx
I'll try it out and let everyone know if there is a performance improvement.

I just tried it out in VM. I have to admit, it's quite cool. On Server 2008 R2, they changed Terminal Services to "Remote Desktop Services" btw.

I get a pretty significant performance improvement on some of computers, less so on the virtual machines (which are already pretty fast). Staff was very happy with the performance improvement.
