Well, I was hoping to update the office this weekend with the official v6 but I guess it's not official yet. My only need for v6 is the better custom-ability of eRx. And also to get rid of this stupid "timeout 91 error" I've been getting in the imported items. I never used to get this error but the last week I'll get it 5 times per day and AC closes.

Time to move on to v6 I guess. I'm patient. I don't want to upgrade my system to a buggy piece of software.

I was too. I'm not comfortable installing Beta software either.

Perhaps you could go into more detail regarding the error and we can get it resolved.

I'm also trying to deploy Amazing Charts via GPO to see how that works.

Travis, I was having this several times daily with importing or opening Imported Items also. Then I read this post. I couldn't find out how to turn off protected mode in Adobe Reader, so I uninstalled Adobe Reader & downloaded the free PDF Reader from Nuance. It seem to display PDFs just as well and no more crashes in Imported Items.

There are a number of other free PDF readers like Foxit with good reviews also.

I have been getting the same error code. Worse than that, I cannot get into AC through my VPN. My VPN works perfectly and I can access other programs on the server, but not AC.

Please tell me the update is coming soon!!

Sometimes this happens with one of our network clients. Did you try to use the IP address of a server? Previously discussed here.

Not only the 91 error but oddly, when I sign the chart now, it just goes back to the schedule screen and doesn't bring up the billing page or letter writer. I think my system is going a bit haywire

We have been using V6.09 since July 5 and we have had no problems. No errors at all. Not really much different. Now have to figure out how to do the MU crap!

I guess this is a reasonable place to note that we have had another of what I call the "stealth visits" by Dr. Bertman... am I the only one who doesn't see these updates until well after they are posted? Here it is, posted 7/11.

The news...."V6, our ONC-ATCB certified Meaningful Use version is ready for official release. We are holding off moving it to this status because our Tech Support folks have been working overtime to assist with ePrescribing set up and trial users. We expect to release V6.0.9 'officially' this week. Existing users who have our Guardian Angel Support & Maintenance may use the beta version here.

There will be a V6.0.10 entering beta which solves many of the issues discussed on the beta download page."

Thus my comment about Zeno... We always have to go half of the remaining distance, so we never actually get there. I saw that post over a week ago (also in stealth mode). Can't explain the re-dating, except by the intervention of my buddy, "Z".

Jon,

Do you know roughly how many times I will have to read that before I understand it. And, can I go back and get a trial version with ePrescribe so I can get support?

Bert,
I am a little concerned that my sarcasm is starting to rub off on you.

Let me translate and personalize it:
Bert, Star printer issue is not fixed. Stay with V5.

I thought my sarcasm was dead on. smile Learned from the master. Is there an alpha, beta and multiple official releases for Dummies. And, a second copy for alpha, beta and multiple official releases for trial users for Dummies?

ver. 6.0x = the official release for Reckless Early Adopters, qualifies for MU, as long as you don't mind glacially slow ePrescribing.

I am still using the Dummies version.

Yes, I read the PBI and the REA but I am still on 5,028 and have read the book three times.

Our ePrescriber freezes the computer for two minutes, but that is likely due to our Intel i7 2600k with SSD III and WIN 7 Pro. But, it is nice, because I get to watch for awhile and see what I am prescribing. Of course, I can't stop it, but I can send another over.

This is fun.

I suspect that you, like I, Bert, am going to wait for another couple of months and let the dust settle. If for no other reason than to have a better crack at tech support if there is a problem.

It just occurred to me... Bert... Maine... those "Bert and I" stories. Ever own a boat called the Bluebird?

I am in it right now.

Yes, I will wait, especially since we are just start VoIP and Auto Attendant. I was reading a Wiki article on the software cycle, and it did mention one type that was a perpetual Beta.

I just always compare AC to Backup Assist or Outlook. With Backup Assist, I will be on version 6.2, which was released say January 1. Maybe....if there is a major addition or fix that they weren't thinking about, a 6.21 or 6.3 will come out AS an official release. All of the beta testing is down by people I don't know and, lately, I have. But, the beta testing for Backup Assist is very rigorous. You must do this and that and this and that (a lot of work as well as just use it). But, then I get an email about 7.0, and I upgrade. With Outlook, there are updates that are downloaded for security, but I have basically used 2000, 2003, 2007 and 2010. But, Backup Assist never emails me that there is a new version called 7.0 that is great and I should install it, but it has five bugs and we will have a new version out in beta in a month.

I know there are many ways to do software. Look at Firefox. Gotta love just opening it, and it tells you to do you want the newest version, and it installs in 30 seconds. And, I am not saying AC does it wrong, I just never understand their method.

Not for me either. I'm not signed on for troubleshooting those 20-odd "issues" mentioned on the 6.09 download page.

Come on guys, official releases are for wimps! smile

And doesn't Jobs' quote mean that Jon B SHOULD officialize V6.09 now? Ok, maybe I did make up that word.

I received a update notice when I restarted AC

Yes, but then it says, there is a 6.0.10 beta coming out shortly to fix some bugs.

I have worked with computers and software for 25 years. If 6.0.9
is the release, then 6.0.10 is a patch.

Actually, I am surprised that 6.0.9 is the formal release. It has been out in beta for some time (like about 2 months.) It is quite stable. I would have expected 6.0.10 to have been the formal release, but hey, here it is as it is.

Welcome to the world of AC where counting is done a little differently. confused

A survey of current or recent users of V5 would probably show them to be pretty evenly split between about 3 versions. The "release" isn't always recognized by everyone as the one to use.

AC betas are usually very stable. They are often widely used in the community because they are so stable. Thus "patches" per se are ever going. As Jon said above, they do things a little different.

The problem is twofold. Unlike a lot of software that you can simply install right over the old one, I really don't think it is a good idea to try that with AC. Not only that, you must install it on every client, and I tend to uninstall and install there as well.

Couple that with the fact that you are playing with probably the most important data you have. Maybe your billing is comparable. This is probably the biggest reason I don't update every time one comes out. I tend to wait even with an official release to make sure it isn't buggy. I couldn't imagine installing v6 only to find out it isn't consistent with the Star Printer. I would then have to revert back to a version that was. So, then I would have to wait on the beta "patch" as well.

Is this what most of you do to update, uninstall the current version, and then install the new version? Do you use the regular Windows uninstaller?

This will be my first time updating, and it gives me pause. This is certainly MOST important data. Although I would like to begin my MU countdown, I am still a bit reluctant to use 6.09 when there is an improved 6.0.10 coming. This is certainly an unusual way of doing releases. I have never felt quite this insecure about updating other software.

I believe from my original installation difficulties that the uninstall leaves the data behind. Is this correct?

You do not have to uninstall the old version & install the new version.
You have to install/update the new version on your MAIN COMPUTER/SERVERusing the INSTALLER & DATABASE TUNER.
On your client computer/computers you have to install only the INSTALLER and do not install the databae tuner.
I would not go through the hassle of uninstalling and installing when the method mentioned above works just fine without any problems.

Donna,

Grenville is correct in that you do not have to uninstall and reinstall. I just prefer doing it that way. I don't know why, but in some tests on a practice machine, I have had run into some issues in the past.

Yes, uninstalling does not uninstall your databases.

I'm running v5. My "server" is a Windows 7 machine. I have two other computers running XP. If I update to v6, am i going to have problems with eRx running slow? I understand that some folks have had issues running v6 with XP.

The issue for us is not XP vs Win7; it is the processor. What are you using?

@jhowland,

I keep telling people this smile but I would get a similar machine to the ones you have. Get a WIN7 with a virtual machine and run XP. (Of course, it would use some of your processor).

Download and run these products and test them first. Eveny computer and network is different. There is good information on here, but I would never upgrade without looking at the new one first.
