oddly can't get sql svr to connect to mdb;
have verified user permissions, deleted MSXML 6, verified port assignment for sql svr/AC, checked routing path to mdb on ac.xml file, used SQL SVR Config app to review properties on db path; no f/u from tech support cuz this is post holiday chaos for them I'm sure; anyone know what I am missing?

Can you connect on the main computer? Are only the clients unable to connect?

the server won't launch AC because sql svr/AC won't start; clients won't run AC because the main database is on the server

even thought the path to the database for sql svr/AC appears correct, I'm still puzzled why it won't start

Go to START | RUN. In the run box, type in SERVICES.MSC and click OK. When the new window appears, scroll down the list of services until you find SQL Server (Amazing Charts) and see if it is started.

I would have to agree with James. Certainly, if your SQL Server (Amazing Charts) instance were not running, you would not be able to connect. But, there are so many ways that would have been fixed.

First, would be a simple reboot of the server. That will normally turn on all services that are supposed to run unless they are actually disabled.

Second, if you try to run AC on the main computer, when it starts up, as part of the startup of the program it will "restart SQL services."

Third, if you get to the end, and you get the big grey window with error messages, running through the IT guy's list will turn on SQL Server. Specifically, the 3rd one down on the left which pertains to the SQL Server.

Finally, if you run Amazing Utilities as an admin, and choose Repair Connections, SQL Server (Amazing Charts) will be started.

The only thing that may throw a wrench it it would be if the service were not configured right. It would likely run OK anyway, and I don't know how it would have gotten changed. But, on the General tab, the Startup type should be set to automatic. Logon should have only one radio button checked in the top left hand corner: Log on as local system account.

James gives a great explanation as to how to get to the services window. If you have difficulty with that, go to Administration Tools --> Services.

Just as an aside, I am assuming that mdb = main database. It is ironic that .mdb is the extension for an Access database, which could be confusing. Obviously, you mentioned SQL several times, so it wasn't an issue. Good luck.

As always, have you rebooted the computer?

long day; AC tech support couldn't solve the problem, that makes the problem seem more mystifying - today we uninstalled sql svr 2005, reinstalled AC, sql svr/AC was not loaded;
reinstalled SQL SVr 2005, reinstalled AC only to see that it is asking for an older install file (KB893803-v2-x86) which was taken off the downloads on Microsoft since SQL 2005 was released (?); have rebooted the server after each modification; it seems like the solution is incipient, but hidden from us; I'm thinking of reformatting the server, and reloading Server 2003, and starting fresh; I might be able to salvage functionality by reloading from one of my backups off the server if the system was mirrored entirely from an earlier point - gonna check with my IT backup; I will let you know where I'm at with this tomorrow; lucky for me I synched my notebook and database before all this trouble so I can at least run off that for now

You say that you install SQL Server, then AC. If neither is on the machine, why aren't you installing AC along with SQL at the same time.

I think reformatting the server would be the biggest mistake you could ever make.

If installing AC and letting it install SQL Express (even though it isn't as good as 2005 Standard would likely solve the problem. SQL would be installed and AC would be installed in its own instance and work.

Short of this, I could put you in touch with my SQL Server expert, and it would be fixed in two to three hours. But, no one ever takes me up on that. Would be much better than reformatting your server and having the same problem. My understanding anyway is you will have a much easier time if you install Express, then upgrade to 2005 Standard.

SQL Express install that loads with AC would not capture the data pathway; AC tech support uninstalled SQL totally, reloaded AC 5.029 and still had no ability to start SQL/AC from Services or SQL config manager, but sqlcmd did run;
I think this server has been hashed by mulitple installs/uninstalls that registry is messed up; used Registry Mechanic to resolve conflicts too, no solution yet;

There is definitely something funky going on there. Where does AC store its DB connection string (SQL ConnectionString ? the DB Directory Path)? A Configuration file (i.e. AC.Config) would be the proper place to store such settings. Did tech support mention, or do anything with the DB configuration file settings while assisting your problem? I also, agree with the above posts from the other IT experts (James, Bert, and Sandeep).

Those guys give great advice. I believe they would be able to solve your problem with more detail on your end. From a developer?s point of view ? I?ll be more concerned with where?s the DB settings stored and how is it being called from startup of AC. I don?t think this is a major issue with other folks, so my advice probably wouldn?t be sufficient to your problem.

I do hope your problem is solved soon, without the reformatting and reinstalling of software.

I am not sure if the file will even download properly, but maybe Microsoft Installer does need an older file.

I think AC is great in support of AC, etc., but I feel if they had fixed the problem, it would have been more mystifying. AC support just isn't that strong with SQL Server.

I am not sure I follow. Basically, you started fresh, AC loaded but without SQL/AC. I am not sure what you mean by reinstalled SQL Server 2005. Was AC on the computer and then you installed SQL Server? How would AC make an instance if it is already loaded? Did you download Express and just install it? When you reference SQL Server 2005 are you always talking about Express. I tend to think of SQL Server 2005 as the standard edition and not Express unless Express is written out. Have you been able touse SQL Server Management Studio?

No matter how many times you have installed and uninstalled, I don't think the registry is going to be an issue.

Did you send a log to James? That may help. Have you opened up your AmazingCharts.xml file to see what path is listed there?

Finally, rather than reformat and do all of that work, which may not even solve the problem, why not consider talking with my expert. You can email him at no cost. I am sure he will let you know if he can fix it.

In this thread, there have been multiple pieces of information about how and why AC won't work. Some of your ideas and some of our ideas have been looked at. But, after reading through this again, one thing stands out. I would forget about everything you have experienced or tried and look at one thing. The face that after the install, you are unable to start SQL Server (AmazingCharts). That is your problem. If it were starting, you would likely have no issue. As you know, and I don't mean to state the obvious, but AC isn't going to work without that service being on. The above links may be helpful, but Google shows that there either things such as SSIS may control SQL Services.

When you go into SQL Server Configuration Manager is every SQL Service logged on as a local account and all set to Automatic. Just dotting all the i's and crossing all the t's.

this is where I have been stymied;
I also had two smart IT people look at the server today, and they encountered this precise block on launching AC - the reinstall is looking for KB893808v2 which I think links sql svr to AC (?);
I did not check the responses on this forum this morning before the IT guys got here, but I will share your helpful advise with them tomorrow when they return;

the entire problem is vexing, and I don't know why shuffling the domain controller precipitated the problem;

I will post updates on my progress here; hope my experience will prevent others from having to go down this road

Did you have a previous installation of SQL Server on this computer?

Is this computer a 64-bit machine?
