So I am seeing many options for remote access, be it LogMeIn, Windows Remote Desktop, or various other solutions along those lines.
My question is, how is the performance when viewing charts remotely? The main office has 5mbit upload capacity, though the branch offices don't have anywhere near that for download, generally around 1.5mbit download.
Is this going to hinder remote performance?

If so, is there any possible way that I can install AC on a "main computer" in the branch office, and have it synchronize at night? Thanks for your time!

The performance is good when viewing charts remotely. Do you really have faster upload speed than download? That's a bit strange.

While your last idea sounds great, I don't think it would be very practical. I would never do it.

The only issue with logmein from a remote office is you have to logmein to a computer that isn't gonna be used by someone in your main office at the time you log in. . .right now i have a main front desk computer and a server that is staionary in my office...i have a laptop for myself...kim uses the desk computer..i put logmein on my server and the front desk computer...when she is at the offcie i just log into the server so we can both work without affectin each other as if i was right there. . .

if you are going to use remote desktop you can still use AC on yoru home computer/satellite office cmoputer and use the data file from the server but have an IT guy set that up for you!

i wouldn't do the synch thing, it messes everything up if someone on the main office ocomputers has changed stuff and you changed stuff offsite at the same time. . .

i also use logmein ignition to view charts from my droid phone! it is awesome!

If you are going to need to access the main office with multiple users, then using a terminal server is the best way to go.

Don't sync.

BTW, synch does not work with version 6 just so you all know.

I think synch sucks anyway as it is such a freaking slow process but i have been told you can't get version 6 if you want to synch

I'm sorry for not being 100% clear. The main office has cable internet, 22mbit downstream, 5 mbit upstream
The branch offices have DSL, and are anywhere from 700kbit to 1.5mbit downstream, and 300kbit upstream.

Yes, I have a terminal server, and do plan to use it. My concern is that my internet connection's pipe isn't going to be big enough to handle eight users accessing remotely. (two users each at two branch offices, and up to four more at a third)
We have multiple doctors in our practice, and some that travel between the different offices.
That is why I was thinking of the sync idea; the branch offices don't need "live" access to the database per se, but we would need to be able to have access at some point.

First, the roadblock will be the amount of RAM in the TS. It will take very little bandwidth for each user. The average would be about 100Kbs/user. So, let's take the worse case scenario with all eight working at the same time, this would give about 800Kbs total. And, this would be if every user were accessing/doing keystrokes/mouse clicks, etc. at the same time.

And, if you don't need "live" access, which I don't understand what they will be doing at the remote offices, then it will be even easier.

Syncing backups and syncing Dropbox is helpful and fun, but do you really want to sync every night with all of your patient data. I wouldn't be able to sleep at night. What if right in the middle of a sync, your Internet or server goes down? What will that do to your database. And, performing the perfect sync every time is asking a lot. Nothing against the development of the sync applet, but I would just not trust it for an operation of this scale.

I am trying to connect two offices together. I tried setting a VPN with logmein himachi from work to my home pc just to test. It works, but PAINFULLY slow. It is useless as a working computer. I have a 2003 windows server in the office and just desktops in the second office. Any thoughts? How would a "terminal server" work?

In my mind, there is no way to go but a terminal server. Then connect the other office via RDP.

I agree with Bert. However, keep in mind that your Terminal Server cannot also be your database server or domain controller. A terminal server can only be just that - a terminal server.

We have a windows 2003 server here in the office with 2TB os space and 4GB of RAM. We have had as many as 8 RDP sessions on the server running AC v609 and it worked well. It was not slow at all.

Bob,

Are you using the termsvr.dll or a terminal server you haven't mentioned?
