wouldn't it be nice if when a message is sent , a bell, buzzer or flashing light would alert the person that they have received a message

That would be very nice, even just updating the message list would be useful, which does not happen automatically. You have to hit the message button on the top left to update it manually.

Updating messages has long been on the long list of nice additions. Notification is an even better addition and should be there too.
