I've been using Paperport 11 Se+ on our network to manage faxes. It does the job fine - but there is a lag each time the screen reloads / refreshes. What would take seconds on paper is taking minutes. The PC we are using as the fax server operates at 1.6 GHz and has only 1 GB RAM. Not sure if an upgrade on the fax server computer would make that much difference. Would it? Alternatively - I played with UpDox on the trial version for a while but never really rolled it out for a full office test. I'd appreciate any thoughts or recommendations.

I swithched from PP to Updox about 3 or 4 months ago. I find it much easier to use and I like the editing better. It is significantly more expensive but the cost is offset somewhat by the fact that you can eliminate your fax line. It has a patient portal which I have not used yet but I am hoping that will make it even more valuable. You can fill in forms on your computer screen, sign with a transparent signature and fax it to wherever it needs to go. They have very responsive support. BUT remember that you are charged for each fax PAGE so don't be wooed by the $30/month cost. Unless you don't do a lot of faxing it will cost you more than that. There is also a cost for each user above 3. I have just accepted it as the cost of doing business because I find it so useful and easy to use. I have a solo practice and a total of 4 users. I signed up for the 2000 fax per month package and I think I pay $75/month minus the $40/month charge for the fax line I no longer need. You can also get into it with your password from any computer connected to the internet. If you have other specific questions about Updox there are lots of strings out there and lots of users on here. All of us would be happy to answer them.

I also use UpDox and have been since may of this year. I do sports medicine where i get a lot of xray reports and mri reports faxed to the office. So i have them fax right to the updox number. The awesome thing about updox is that it has direct access to import files into AC and all the patietns in your AC database are interfaced. So you can click on the fax and hit send and connect it to a pt's chart. I think it is great. I haven't seen another one that makes it as easy!

We are very happy with UpDox. Documents are imported into AC easily and quickly. We started with Paperport and to me it has a lot of annoying features; we still have Brother MFC's but we have gotten rid of PP altogether.
We purchased Fax Talk (an inexpensive program which does overlap in its functionality with UpDox somewhat). We have set Fax Talk to take all of our incoming faxes and convert them to pdf's, which are picked up by UpDox. (This all takes place in the background with absolutely no effort, once it is set up). The advantage...our cost for UpDox is fixed at $30 a month, regardless of how many faxes we receive. We do still maintain a fax line (if you could otherwise get rid of a phone line, the cost differential changes). Getting additional faxes is now essentially free, and the documents are easy to import so we keep pushing the hospital lab and radiology (anything that does not have an interface) to send us faxes. The result is much less paper and scanning.

I am not sure I understand:
So the Fax Talk pics up the incoming faxes on the updox line and converts them to a PDF file, then updox pics them up like a scanned document and you do not get billed for a fax by updox? Is that right?

You can use updox and if you use another method (like your own fax line) to import them then Updox does not charge you more than the base fee.

Great solution, The only negative is paying for Updox and a dedicated fax line. My current problem is we have to print the the progress notes and imports and then fax them to where we want them to go. Do you have a solution to that problem?

My current problem is we have to print the the progress notes and imports and then fax them to where we want them to go. Do you have a solution to that problem? **** Sounds like a new thread perhaps should be created. **** Having said this, we have the full version of Adobe Acrobat on each computer. Therefore we "Print To" the Adobe print driver (instead of our physical printer), which creates a PDF file on the desktop. Do this for each document you need from the chart, easily lasso (combine) those docs together into one PDF. Then "Print To" your networked fax machine as a "PC to Fax" feature, enter the fax number or select from your fax machines address book. Boom, done. No wasted paper. For simple things, my staff occasionally prints out the paper and manually feeds it (where one piece of paper is needed quickly and one doesn't have the 30 seconds to do what I described above). Where this is VERY helpful is when we have routine referrals or the occasional 300 pages of old records that need to go to another office (NO WAY ARE WE PRINTING AND THEN FAXING 300 PAGES--<<Sorry, I'm not screaming just emphasizing>>). We just PC-Fax these records. If you don't have a networked or UPS connected fax, you won't be able to do this.
