Do versions 10 and or 11 intergrate with AC or do you have to use the medical version?

The non-medical versions 10 & 11 of DNS will shut down (not work) if you open AC on the same computer.

Yes you can, or else dictate into Dragon Pad, the built in text editor, and cut & paste. But DNS 10 won't even start up if AC is running. So you have to shut down AC, then open and paste. Might as well just type.

Do versions 10 and or 11 intergrate with AC or do you have to use the medical version? Here is an extended discussion about Nuance's policy to make EMR users buy the Medical Version of Dragon Naturally Speaking, starting with version 10. Two years ago, I also sent a message to NY Times tech columnist David Pogue, who is a big DNS fan, complaining about Nuance's policy targeting doctors with EMRs. Although Nuance responded that they were going to provide a discount to upgrade to version 10 Medical, it never happened. If you have the time, read through some of the reader's responses to the article. All of them come come down hard on Nuance for squeezing their medical users for extra profits. I doubt that it made much of an impact on DNS sales, but I'm sure many of us enjoy trashing Nuance's rep on boards like this, and hitting the "junk/delete" button on their spammy emails about the other overpriced software trash they peddle. Which includes Paperport 12, by the way.

Hello Friends,
Everyone is kind of trapped by the corporate control over the use of VRS (Voice Recognition Software) with EMRs. I am a software engineer, also worked on VRS systems for robots back in 1992.
Here is what I tried for my wife's pediatric practice on her tablet PC. I bought Nuance's Dragon Naturally speaking Home version 11.0 from buy.com for $45.00 shipped.
I am using tablet PC and accessing AC using VPN. Dragon is installed on tablet PC. You start your AC and place the cursor in the appropriate box for your dictation. Start dictating, it works great!!
PS: When using any VRS like Dragon, one needs to have patience. It all works according to the instructions set it has and your STYLE of dictation. You also need to add new words to instructions set (Vocab) as you progress. It is like potty training a baby when it poops. It happens initially until it builds the vocab and understands only your voice for your profile. It takes nearly 2 to 3 months to build the vocab. I am using the same headset (mic) provided by Dragon in the box. Works great.

Hello, I have been struggling to find where I can purchase Dragon. It appears that Nuance does NOT sell the medical version. I have found various places online however the price ranges from $1500-$2000! Can someone help me?
Also has anyone ever tried the non-Medical version of Dragon? Could that be trained to learn medical jargon since it costs a lot less?
Dr. Niko
Thanks

Non-medical no longer works after Version 9.5 due to Nuance choosing to disable on computers with an EMR - you can get it to work by logging on from outside computer with dragon and then doing AC over the remote connection, but this is not for the average user. If you go to http://amazingcharts.com/services/interfaces/speech-recognition/ you will find a deal for about $1,100 arranged by AC. I don't really know how good of a deal that is, but at least it is someone that Jon trusts.

Our of curiosity, and stated in purely theoretical terms, a DNS 10 small practice license is for a practice of "five or fewer docs".
I assume the program keeps only up to 5 user profiles hence the # 5 "limit" but......
Do the docs have to be in the same spot? i.e. satellite offices, same state etc? Uh, (ahem) do they really need to be in the same practice? If so, how can that be tracked? Just wondering of course.

Reply/clarification to my own musing.
If license only for install on one computer, then what happens with satellite offices? One has to use Log Me In or Go To My PC for just one main computer installation or ?

Small Practice version allows install on up to 5 computers with a single CD code. The software goes online during installation to check.

Hi. Can you give me some guidance on HOW you got the VPN to open AC? Which VPN is it? I have tried several but can't them to oen AC at all. They can open everything else though. Thank you. And I was looking into getting Dragon too so thanks for the tip. I almost shelled out $1500 bucks!

Lois,
I guess it should work as long as DNS and AC are not installed on the same computer.

wwpp,
If you have set up the VPN on the host computer (Office server/computer), you can accees it by Remote Desktop Connection (menu path Start> All Programs> Accessories) from home computer or laptop. Once RDC window appears, you type IP addr of the Office computer followed by :3389 i.e. xx.xx.xxx.xxx:3389. Then a new window will ask for userid & password (like Administrator or other userid you have set to access via VPN). For more secured connection you can add one more layer of security (different userid & password).
(PS: Remote desktop is fast but not be the best secured connection. That is why you add one more layer of security. But RDC comes free with windows.)
Now you are connected to office computer. You will be able to open AC if you log in as Administartor (or the user id you have given admin priveledges to). Open Dragon on the laptop, go to the VPN window, you will see Dragon's menu bar at the very top.
Hope this helps.

Arthur,
You do NOT have to uninstall AC to install VPN on your laptop.

forgive my confusion. This is new to me. I have set up Hamachi on my office computer. I am also using logmein on my laptop. Do I have to install Hamachi on my laptop and join the network I set up on my office computer in order to access amazing charts on the office . Do I access the main computer with logmein or through the Hamachi network. If I am correct so far, do I then access Dragon on the laptop and use it on AC on the main computer. thanks in advance Arthur Lukoff

Arthur, You can access it both ways as 'attached' i.e. Loggin in the logmein OR unattached client, depending upon your Hamachi configuration. https://secure.logmein.com/welcome/documentation/EN/pdf/Hamachi2/LogMeIn_Hamachi2_GettingStarted.pdfPlease refer to page 10 for installation instructions in the above link. Start Dragon on your laptop, you will see the dragon taskbar at the very top of the screen. Connect to your office computer, access AC, you should be able to dictate.

I have finally installed Hamachi and can use Dragon 10 on my main computer. Maybe I did not understand how the VPN works. Mine takes over the main computer so that when i change a screen on the laptop, the screen on the main computer also changes.I do not see the benefit if two people are working in the office at the same time. I too have been using Dragon 11 via my VPN.
Is there anyway to import medical terms, phrases etc?

Dr. Niko,
You can install full medical vocabs into Preferred 10 or Premium 11 that are the same as Medical 10 but more versatile. That's all I can say on this sub-forum. If you're interested you can inquire on the vendor sub-forum.

After getting over the frustration of the limits of my VPN, I rediscovered that Vista has a Speech Recognition Program. If I set up good templates, the Vista system is more then adequete to suppliment any additonal comments I choose to make. It takes training similiar to dragon but it is a pleasure to dictate directly into AC and not select all,cut and paste. Arthur Lukoff
