OK, you have a jpeg of Mrs. A and insert it. Later you realize that the photo is actually of Mrs. B's face and you don't really have a photo of Mrs. A. There is no way of removing a photo unless you replace it with another. Stuck!!

What is the best way to insert a photo?

I wish there was direct connect with a webcam so that one does not have to take a pic, crop it, save it, then import it. Too many steps.

Workaround: download or create and save a generic graphic that says "photo not available". Use that to cover up the photo of Mrs. B that you stuck in Mrs. A's chart.

I googled up a sample graphic. I thought it looked nice, sends an instant message that the photo is missing, and it's only a 14k jpeg:

Just download that and save for special occasions.

I am still experimenting with the best way to add photos myself and there are probably others with a more elegant technique.

Right now, I have my camera set to lowest rez settings, and I try to fill the screen with the patient's face when I take the shot, so you can recognize them when it's reduced.

This is still producing a pretty big file, so later we open the pics with Microsoft Office Picture Manager (which came with Office, I suppose).

If you have that, you can click on the "Edit Pictures" tab, then "Compress Pictures" and get them down to "E-mail message" size, which is 13K. Save, and rename. Delete originals. It is clunky, I know, but you don't want to clog your database with memory-intensive images.

I had thought about experimenting with some of these freeware programs designed specifically for batch image resizing, but I am a little paranoid about freeware & shareware:

http://www.softpedia.com/get/Multimedia/Graphic/Image-Convertors/Avatar-Sizer.shtml

If you scroll down the page, there is a whole list of freeware batch photo sizers, but I have not tried any of them. Maybe someone else has.

Or perhaps you have a sacrificial computer, and you would be willing to experiment with each of them, Zak, for the sake of the entire Amazing Charts family! ;-)

Good luck
Brian

Brian and Zak,

I have thought about using my Pocket PC which takes somewhat low resolution photos (100KB) which is better than the 7.2MP of digital camera. However, I've been leery about using the pictures in general as I do not know where the picture is stored in the database. Do you know?
Primarily, if I take a jpeg and dumped it in the My Picture's place and attached it to Amazingcharts, then later deleted the pictures from My Picture, would it still be there? (Kind of like the question about the light and the refrigerator door closed, eh?).

The picture is stored in the AmazingCharts.mdb most likely in the demographics table.

And, yes, once you import it, it is there to stay even if you delete the original picture.

And, as soon as you close the refrigerator door, little pixies unscrew the light bulb. They are very quick!
