So I was talking to my brother over the weekend about setting up my server and he posed an interesting question.

If my server is in my office or the desktop i am just using as a computer is in the office and someone breaks in and steals the computer. Now my database is on there. What is the liability and is there insurance to protect me from a patient suing me because their info got out to someone else because of the theft?

Just a thought.

Good Question. I don't know the answer, but assume it's the same as someone breaking in a taking paper charts.

I was reading about ways in which one can encrypt their data. There are various ways in which one can do this, one I read about is http://www.truecrypt.org/.

Additionally, offsite backup is essential in my mind. It won't help what's already gone, but at least I still have a copy of the documents.
