As of June 1, the feds say we can write and transmit Schedule II prescriptions electronically ( http://www.deadiversion.usdoj.gov/ecomm/e_rx/faq/practitioners.htm )
The conditions that would allow individual practitioners to do this include obtaining written documentation from the electronic prescription program provider that the program meets the government criteria for security, etc, as well as meeting stringent log-in and signing rules. Do we as AC users have this ability or is it in process?

As a pediatrician w/ lots of ADHD kids and mounds of monthly stimulant prescriptions to write, this would be a real time saver.

From what I have read the difficulty will be the verification that will be required to prescribe controlled substances will be more complex. You will need either a biometric (fingerprint reader for example) or a separate encrypted token (RSA for example)code so that people will not be able to use your computer and password and send out prescriptions.
They want it tighter than that.

We subscribe to Surescripts through this program. My understanding thorugh reading their website information is that they are qualifed and approved for this process so I assume this means we are safe to use it? Is this not accurate?

As far as I can tell no one is doing controlled substances yet - you have to have a hardware based second method of verification such as USB key, fingerprint scanner, etc besides your standard passwords and log in - then the pharmacy software has to be verified in order to do this. The rule was published in 3/10 or after and I am sure AC is working towards this, but I think the way the rule is written it will be a pain to get everything working.

I think we should all keep wishing, but I for one want AC to finish their refill module so that it is more seamless and then get to Scheduled meds.

I suppose I was hoping we could just go back to the way it used to be! When you compare the allowance of phoned in scripts versus something coming from E-scribe these new ideals are way over the top in my humble opinion. I agree that the refill module needs immediate attention.

I just tried to send Norco over electronically. I got a form back to sign from Surescripts. I thought we were able to send Schedule III scripts electronically. I can certainly fax them, which is less secure!

Doctor's,

Also please remember that DrFirst has done a pilot with the DEA for the past 10 months and has been sending Controlled Substances in Berkshire County Mass successfully. If you have any questions on how to get on our system and the interface we have with AC please feel free to contact me via email or phone.

I think it may be some time before we can do controlled meds by eRx. The article that Jeff provides the link for says:
Quote
While e-prescribing of controlled substances became “legal” on June 1, 2010, it still is not technically “possible” on a national scale. Currently, there is no industry-wide infrastructure available to convey controlled substance prescriptions to pharmacies, nor are pharmacies universally ready to accept them. DrFirst anticipates that the pharmacies will begin accepting electronic prescriptions of controlled-drugs in late 4th quarter, 2010.

Oh goodness, that is fabulous news and that is exactly what I understood was acceptable when reviewing the Surescripts site. I am going to call the Oregon Board of Pharmacy and see what they know or don't know about it all!

Our state Medical Association issued this statement today in a newletter:

New DEA Rule Allows Electronic Prescription of Controlled Substances

The Drug Enforcement Administration has revised its regulations concerning the prescription of controlled substances to allow health care providers to prescribe them electronically and pharmacies to receive, dispense and archive these electronic prescriptions. The DEA has indicated that this regulation is an addition to, not a replacement of, existing rules. The DEA's Office of Diversion Control says that "the regulations provide pharmacies, hospitals, and practitioners with the ability to use modern technology for controlled substance prescriptions while maintaining the closed system of controls on controlled substance dispensing." The regulation is also expected to cut down on prescription forgery and prescription errors.

This rule went into effect June 1, 2010, but its classification as a major rule requires Congressional review. If after reviewing the rule, Congress changes the effective date or terminates the rule, the DEA will publish a document in the Federal Register reflecting any Congressional action on the rule. For a link to the rule, background information and Q&A for health care providers, visit www.deadiversion.usdoj.gov/ecomm/e_rx/index.html .

Perhaps we need only await the approval of Congress? <sigh>
