I finally figured out the issue with the double login. Not only will you only have to log in once, if you check the box to remember you, you will never have to log in again. smile

Now, I know I will post it, and it will get 100 views and no replies. So, I am going to wait until I get five comments and then I will give out the long awaited answer.

So, Wayne, Wendell, Barbara, Leslie, Roy and Paul: Send me a message. OK, so if I don't get five comments by tomorrow, I will post it anyway. Just trying to build some suspense.

OK. My doctor friend invited me to dinner. I will come back after a steak and a Heineken and promise to post the answer. It's so easy and so cool. I promise. I'm just happy I got two posts.

OK, so what would be the odds that after a year of having to log in twice, two people would figure it out at the same time.

Donna, you can have the honors <G>

Now I'm logged in all the time! Everytime I go to the forum! This is ... magical. I just logged in a few posts ago and hit the "remember me" thingamabob. Was that all there was to it? I must be possessed or something!

I swear! That's all I've done. Maybe you'd better tell your side of it, in case mine was blind, dumb luck! Maybe I'm not getting the full value of my revelation!

I don't think you are because the fix while easy is also fairly complicated.

Geez, no! After I blurbed out the first time, I immediately started second-guessing myself! I think I just got caught up in the moment... Now I will slink back under my desk and wait for 5pm out here in northern caullifornia (per Arnold). No apology needed, I was just trying to play with the big boys!!

What is happening is that we are getting to the forum on one URL, but it's actually set up on another.

So, we log in on http://www.amazingcharts.com/ub/ubbthreads.php

BUT....the forums are set to run on:

http://amazingcharts.com/ub/ubbthreads.php (there is no www)

So when the user tries to log in it actually redirects to the proper URL, but the cookie won't be carried over because it's considered a different domain!

NOW...watch very carefully when you first open the userboards from Amazing Charts. The URL you will actually see once you are redirected will be:

http://www.amazingcharts.com/ub/ubbthreads.php

Click on Log In. The above URL will become:

http://www.amazingcharts.com/ub/ubbthreads.php?ubb=login

Now, type in your username and password and click login or hit enter. You will now see the URL change to:

http://amazingcharts.com/ub/ubbthreads.php?ubb=cfrm

THEREIN LIES THE ANSWER. It is no longer http://www, it is now http://amazingcharts.com........

You will NOT be logged in. Click on Log In again and type in your username and password.

Now you will be logged in. BECAUSE...the site that these boards is actually on is:

http://amazingcharts.com/ub/ubbthreads.php

I would recommend making a shortcut to the above. There are three ways to do this:

1. Click on the above URL and then save it as a favorite
2. Right-click on the desktop, choose new and shortcut, then copy and paste the above in the first box, then click next and type a name such as AC Boards
3. Click on the above link to open it, then right-click anywhere in the window that is not used (white area) and choose Create Shortcut and then yes at the prompt.

The latter two options will put a white and blue star icon with a "u" in the middle on your desktop.

Clicking on this icon OR the one in your favorites will open the boards to the correct location. You will notice that it is http://amazing.... rather than http://www.amaz.....

This will allow you to log in only once. But, after you put in your username and password, select the "Remember Me On Each Visit" check box, and you can log in without ever entering a username and password from now on UNLESS you choose to log out, which you should never do. Even if you reboot, the cookie will remember you and you will NOT need to log in again.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you have questions or if there are any problems.

Bert,
"You're eyes they look but they do not see." In the words of Drew on Who's line, 1000 points to the person who can guess the quote above...

Burt, I am impressed. So AC has us all linking to the wrong address by ever so little. I've always just linked thru AC since it is always open around the office no matter which computer I'm at. That is something this learning disabled, ADD'er would have looked right past for the next 5 years probably. Very good and so simple too.

Hats off to Bert. "Chim, chiminy; chim, chiminy; chim, chim charoo....." whistle

Exactly! By ever sooooo little.

I looked around and have actually found the "fix code" for the UBB itself, if we are using Apache. But, I don't know much about the boards, i.e. are we maintaining them or just using them. It seems to be related to the .htaccess file.

Well, have you noticed my absence from the boards regarding this issue? I have not complained about the double entry. It's never been an issue. For the life of me, I can't figure out why I am always logged on. Even when I turn off Amazingcharts, turn of the computer, I seem to always be logged on. But I don't want to complain because it's OK for me to be permanently logged on to the user board.
I suspect now that Bert has broken the DaVinci code, we'll have a more active board. Look forward to seeing more participants!!

Even as I read the post in my notification email (yeah, I got one), I knew it was you, Roy. You stay logged in, because I sent your computer some magic pixie dust a few months back. Wonderful stuff.

But, in reality, I guess for an FYI, that will be my next research venture.

And now, of course, that the reason and directions on the workaround are out, I will receive no more comments. : )

AARRGGHH!! But, it was fun while it lasted.

I should also extend an apology to all those who posted for my passive-aggressive immaturity rather than posting the answer, lol. I also made it rather complicated (maybe not) as I wanted to give the explanation. LOL <G> I love everyone on these boards. I really do.

Roy,

Rather than the pixie dust (OK how many out there thought it was really pixie dust?), my guess is somehow you set yours up rather than through the AC but as a shortcut. And if you were past the first screen and made a shortcut from there and clicked the box, you would be able to get it over and over. I bet if you went in and then LOGGED OUT rather than closing it, you may not be able to be on all the time. You could of course change it back. A very smart computer expert from Experts-Exchange.com once told me that no matter how bizzare something is, there is always an easy explanation once you figure it out. Great website by the way: www.experts-exchange.com. If you are serious about computing and networking, the $9.95 per month is well worth it.

Bert!

Wow! Thanks for letting us in on this little secret! This was a small problem compared to the eariler issue with the cookies, but I'm glad the mystery is solved.

Barbara

ps - Can you send some magic pixie dust this way? I feel left out. wink

I just saw this! YOU ARE DA MAN! Thanks for solving this one.

I typically go to the AC website, select User Group, and get re-directed. Guess I won't do that anymore.

But I do remember an earlier post of mine (and/or a message to Jon) saying that the problem started when we started being redirected for the boards. Those of us that have been around a bit will remember when we didn;t get redirected.

Thanks again Bert!

Wayne,

Yeah, I had you down in the first post. You, Roy, Barbara and Paul haven't let me down. <G>

I definitely remember the day the redirect happened. It's funny, because I/We go to a lot of sites with a redirect but probably don't log in.
