In version 4, I believe there was an option to import patient demographics as well as patient encounters. I see that there is the option to export these two options but I have not found out how to import patient encounters. One tab is available to import demographics and I would assume that an import feature for patient encounters would be beneficial (as well as importing of other data saved out to csv files).
I would suggest that in the import/export section, if there is an export feature for any specific file, an import feature for the same file would make things a lot easier in the future. Especially if the imported data can be appended to the current data in a specific category or replace altogether (similar to how patient demographics importing is structured).

that is interesting. I wonder if CCHIT certification only mandates export in .csv format but doesn't address ability to import?
What happens in the future when a new patient comes with a .csv file (or signed doc permitted prior doctor to release records in that format)? what would I do with it?

Both in version 4 and version 5, you can import the CCR or CCD file by going to File, Import/Export, Continuity or Care Record, Import CCR. This will import the CCR as long as it is in a .XML format. CCHIT states it can be either .CSV or .XML format.

Thanks for the walk through. Is it possible to add an option to the import/export section to import patient encounters (or at least mention that patient encounters in xml format can be imported as a CCR?) Just so users are able to find a solution without having to ask the same questions over. A button that says "import patient encounters" can be added and just linked to the same directory as the File/import CCR... function. This just makes it more intuitive IMO.

Yes, you can convert a .csv file to an .xml file by simply renaming the file and removing the .csv and imputing .xml. So, for example, you have patient1.csv. You would rename it to patient1.xml. If you do not see the extension at the end of the file name, go to folder options in the control panel and uncheck the "Hide known file extensions" option. If you can not see the extension and try to rename it, you will get something like this. patient1.xml.csv which will not convert it.
Jerad, I agree with you on that. There really is not anything explaining that the encounters can be imported as a CCR. I will bring your request to the development team. I would also recommend that you enter that as a recommended improvement. The more they see the request, the faster it will be added.

I tried renaming the patient encounter csv file to xml but I am having some issues importing as a CCR (and even CCD). The import CCR assumes the file is for one patient. However, the patient encounter csv file I exported was encounters for all patients (sort of a backup of all visits for all patients in unencrypted format). As of right now, I dont see an option to import a bulk patient encounter saved as a csv file (more than one patient). CCR does not seem to work (even with the file renamed with xml). It asks for the basic patient information it should append it to. Problem is that the csv (renamed to xml) file is more than one patient. Also, if I try to cancel out of this function, it comes up with two popups that alternate when I close one and wont let me get out of it until I enter the patient information or bring up the task manager and kill the AC process. Importing the renamed xml file to CCD comes up with an error of "Whitespace is not allowed at this location. Error processing resource 'file:///C:/Users/...."
Let me know what I should do if you can. Thanks.

It does not appear that there is a way to import a .csv file successfully. Ive tried every approach mentioned without success. (Also to note: the "import CCR/CCD" button within the import/export section of the admin section, does not appear to work.) If someone would attempt to import a .csv file and then post how you were successful, that would be wonderful! (on a stand alone computer, since I wouldnt want you to mess up your database!).
The patient encounters in the .csv format (even tried as .xml format) do not appear to import by any means which leads me to the conclusion that there is no reason to ever export all of your patient encounters as a .csv file from the import/export section of the admin screen.
If there is no way to successfully import the .csv file back into the system, AC users should stick to .enc files (encrypted backup files) exclusively. This will save a lot of headache and time if you want to restore files.
