I would like to be able to fully customize all imported item folders, including ability to add, delete, and rename folders at whim.
This way, I can categorize as needed: I like to put all records relevant to, say, a hospitalization together.

If you use the TWAIN scanning interface in AC you can only use the pre set categories. However, at any time you may right click on a file, select edit, then give the file an arbitrary category. After you have done that you can drag new files to that category.
You may instead opt to scan to a folder then drag the file from that folder into the AC imported items window. It will default to 'unspecified' name. Then you can rename and categorize the files as you wish.
HTH, if I was cryptic just mention as much. I want to be clearer. I suspect this area will be improved after another version plus a couple sub versions.

Thank you!
I will have to try that. By "right click on file and edit.." did you mean to right click on a "folder?" or you actually meant "file?"
Woe is me. I spent the entire day fighting with my network; my tech help on site trying to correct strange errors. Then my scanner was not operating correctly.
Can AC grab the scanner and hold it hostage in the background, out of reach of other programs???? Something is doing that on my machine so I cannot scan into paperport. My tech help is tackling that one tomorrow morning.
*SIGH*

I don't believe AC would be able to do such a thing as hold the scanner so that other programs cannot use it. I hope your tech can figure out what is going on and tell you so that if it happens again you can try to remedy it yourself.

When I say category I mean folder (directory), and when I say file I mean the items items listed beneath the folder icons. Right click those, you'll see it say 'edit' and 'sign off'.
Unless your installation and scanner are different AC does not hold onto it ...(well, it can if you use the TWAIN interface and leave some of the windows open, in which case you should minimize everything to check for that. But I doubt this is the case.)
Can you scan at all? Are you scanning by push button or controlling from the paperport application? If push button maybe you are scanning to the wrong folder? Probably unlikly, but your tech could and should fix that so you can scan straight to paperport.

Yeah, thanks guys. I don't think AC has anything to do with it. There were like 3000+ registry errors and scanner drivers from previous scanner and who knows what else. so everything looks OK right now. (sorry this morphed from "wishlist" into a trouble ticket).

that procedure for assigning a custom category to import folder worked perfectly and is very easy to do.
Thanks!

We use the import item folders significantly for scanning in outside documents such as consults, immunization records, labs, pathology etc. There are folders preset in AC that you can put the item into however, all of those folders require a sign off from a provider. It also seems to be that we have to edit the description after an item has been imported into the chart in order to create a custom folder name. As the designated person to sign off on all scanned documents that have been signed off by the providers on paper, this really could use some work. There is no ability that I've been able to find, to alter the folder requirements, such as creating a folder entitled "flow sheets" and have no sign off required.

The Imports section would benefit from nested folders. After a couple of years, the list is getting very long for some patients. It would be nice to make sub folders by Consult specialty, Year of report, etc... I'd like to have the option to set folders as closed by default rather than all open as it is now.

Agreed!
It seems that AC takes some time to open the screen when we have a pt with extensive information in the imported files section.

Would love this feature - much slower now that I have a few years worth of imported items. Also has a lot of scrolling with labs open.

That sounds like a VERY easy (programming)fix. A single flag in the code changed from "on" to "off" on startup and you'd have your closed-by-default.
