I want to check with other AC users to see if anyone hs had a permission failure associated with the import items folder either with AC 3 or 4. I started to have problems accessing certain files in ac 3 and then after the AC 4 conversion all heck broke loose. I could not access AC. I know that there were some network problems that propagated this failure but I pretty sure it started with corruption of pdf files and permission access to the files through the Import items folder.
Any comments or thoughts? Thanks R. Allen MD

It could be a PDF issue, or file rights issue, can you open the PDF file through the file explorer? e.g. Navigate to your Amazing Charts folder and go the the ID number of a patient you are having trouble with. Can you open the PDF?

Is the folder shared? If so, did you check permissions to make certain all network users have them?

There is def. permission problem. I have to reconfig. permission on each pdf file that wont open . This is not good given I have over 4000 files with a varied number of pdf files in each.
I am confused how these pdf files got this way? I am not sure....not sure what to do accept go through files as I access them and find the problem.

That isn't right. You should be able to set the security so your group (or everyone) has full rights to the folder itself, not the files. Then all subfolders and files should share those rights.

Ben is 100% correct. Your folder may be shared but you may not have permissions set correctly. If this is a permissions issue then you should set the group permissions to have access. Here's one way to do it, there are others. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308419 This is taken verbatim from the above URL, about 3/4 of the way down the page: Set, view, change, or remove special permissions for files and foldersTo set, view, change, or remove special permissions for files and folders: 1)Click Start, click My Computer, and then locate the file or folder where you want to set special permissions. 2)Right-click the file or folder, click Properties, and then click the Security tab. 3)Click Advanced, and then use one of the following steps: To set special permissions for an additional group or user, click Add, and then in Name box, type the name of the user or group, and then click OK. To view or change special permissions for an existing group or user, click the name of the group or user, and then click Edit. To remove an existing group or user and the special permissions, click the name of the group or user, and then click Remove. If the Remove button is unavailable, click to clear the Inherit from parent the permission entries that apply to child objects. Include these with entries explicitly defined here check box, click Remove, and then skip steps 4 and 5. 4)In the Permissions box, click to select or click to clear the appropriate Allow or Deny check box. 5)In the Apply onto box, click the folders or subfolders where you want these permissions applied. 6)To configure security so that the subfolders and files do not inherit these permissions, click to clear the Apply these permissions to objects and/or containers within this container only check box. 7)Click OK two times, and then click OK in the Advanced Security Settings for FolderName box, where FolderName is the folder name. Let us know how it turns out.

Whoaaaa!!! I do OK with a computer once in awhile, but after reading that, I need a couple of beers. Now, you know I can do that and, like anything else, once you go through it, it will seem fairly easy. But, for the average user....yikes!
First, EVERY folder within a shared folder with the correct permissions should be accessible UNLESS the folder was specifically set to not have the proper permissions, which from the question and the questioner, I doubt is the cause.
The PDF thing makes little sense. To test your theory, move a couple out onto your desktop. You can certainly password protect them, but it shouldn't be a permissions issue.
>>I have over 4000 files with a varied number of pdf files in each<< I assume here you have over 4,000 folders
We need to know more things.
Beginning:
Questions about setup and do you have your network set up correctly? You need to have the right hardware.
1. What type of network do you have? e.g. Is it peer-to-peer or client/server (workgroup or domain). In other words, is your AC folder with all of your files and databases on one central server with all of the other computers accessing it or are all the computers just connected to each other with the "main computer" having the database? 2. What exact version of AC do you have? 3. What happened in 3.0? 4. What do you mean "all hell broke loose?" Need specifics, e.g. in 3.0, the problem happened occasionally, now I can't get to any file. 5. What OS are you using? Vista Business, Vista Home, XP Pro, XP Home? If it is XP Home, GO BACK to beginning. 6. If you are using a server, what type and what OS? 7. From any computer on your network, can you browse to the server? to the AC folder? to the ImportItems folder? Can you open the ImportItems folder and see the subfolders? Can you open them? 8. DID YOU MOVE YOUR DATABASES T O A DIFFERENT FOLDER?
Here are three illustrations I made to point out shares, permissions and folders.
If you still have questions that aren’t answered here, I would be glad to remote into your computer and see if I can find the problem. If I can.
Who knows? Maybe your PDF files just have bad permissions. J/K but who knows.

RCA,
If you get a chance to list that information, we may be able to help.
