Here's another really useful and needed feature I'd love to see. What I've heard refered to as "Hot Sync". This is where one can take a portable Computer off site, it has the most recent version of your data on it (as of when it left the office or was last in contact with the main system) you can use it both to refer to as well as chart to it, whether at home, on a housecall (yes, my wife makes housecalls), or at the hospital. When the laptop and the server get back together later on, they sort of easily "Update" eachother and "Sync" their data back up. This is much better than trying to find a safe internet connection back to the main office or what have you. I was told that this was a real feature that they were going to work on and get out sometime. Just wanted to see what others thought about it too.

Sounds awesome. Complicated, but awesome.

This would be a dream come true. heck, my pda can do it, AC should too. Then again, I have no idea what it would entail as far as programming.

...COOL, BUT SOUNDS LIKE ANOTHER EXCUSE FOR A.C. TO CRASH! SERIOUSLY, I'D WORRRY ABOUT DATABASE INTEGRITY! NOT SURE IF YOU CAN DO IT IN ACCESS...PERHAPS IF ANOTHER DATABASE PROGRAM WAS USED....HMMM.

This is a must function for anyone who wishes to work off site. In hospital admissions/ consults, ER patients, remote office, or home are all within reach with this function. Thumb drives and remote access via internet connections have serious drawbacks including cost and security. Other EMRs are offering this attache feature ( perhaps not access databased systems). Carlos at the help desk states he has not gotten the Windows synctoy to work either. Anyone else have any solutions?

I wish it was that easy. VPNs, firewalls, and computer techs at the tune of 85$ an hour and what I have now is still not fast or reliable. Any other sugessions?

I tired of having everybody tell me I should be super secure for HIPAA police issues, yet everybody is allowed to have their charts connected to the internet where they have the chance of being abused by the entire population of the world. I want to be able to keep my charting system in a "closed loop" off line type of mode. Then I'll share my data on an need to know, need to get things done basis. I want to disconnect my server at night when I'm not here to babysit it and watch for attack warnings. Being connected to the web should be non-compliant as far as I'm concerned. I really want this hotsync so my doc can do her housecalls, chart in bed and so on. Also, it's great when you get paged at 3 am to be able to pull your pt's chart and refresh your memory when you're tired and confused. What doseages or what have you....

"I tired" too ...sorry...cheez, y'all...i was kidding about the wireless at every patients house thing....i agree with the hot sync thing. i'm not so sure I trust the logmein.com thing, and anyway it's a pain the in the a** to use (kinda slow, etc.). always works better to bring the database with me, etc.

i have written this in other topics, so forgive me. but using a wirelss card from sprint or verizon in a laptop works great. then you do not need to set up routers or worry about syncing. i use logmein, but you could use vpn, gotomypc, xp, etc.
i do it this way and do not understand why anyone would want to do it a different way. i can also check messages and communicate with staff. with a hot sync method, you cannot do that.

Here's what I do When I get home I connect to my database using logmein.com. Using file transfer I trandfer any files from the database to my home computer that have a more recent date on them. This usually means transferring the amazing.mdb, billing, mdb and coding.mdb. I then work on that computer, can be a laptop I take around (yes, I do housecalls too) and as long as no one else has messed with ac while I am using this version on my laptop I can then transfer back the files to the database.
I click at the top of each column twice to get them ordered by date. The files that need to move over are usually the first three or four. Takes just a few minutes. I don't mess with the imported files folder every time. I update that on the laptop about once a week when I have a lot of time to let it sit.
An alternative option which I have used is to take a little usb memory card and transfer the pertinent files to it. Attach it to my keychain and sync it with the laptop when I get home. Do the reverse in the morning and sync it woth the computer at work before anyone gets on AC.
Sounds complicated but it really is simple.

But I want to stay off the net as much as possible. I'm tired of all the garbage out there, hurting machines even with name brand internet protection suites and the like. And also, with the swapping idea, nobody else can use AC while you're gone. What about a midday housecall. I should be able to add a new appointment here in the office while Nancy is out and about, and then they update eachother upon her return. There's one company for sure that has done this already. The Alta Point product that we can now X-Link to for Practice Managment. I'm leaning heavily to using this product for the PM feature. Dr. Jon said that he was going to make this feature in the near future. It was one of my sticking points before signing on. So, I started this line of stuff to remind him of the need, and to let him see all the different solutions everyone was playing with while waiting.

We use Go To My Pc and it works great from anywhere anytime and cost is rational and reasonable.
