Not the same but similar, time consuming, ridiculousness from the insurance company. We had a pt I ordered an MRI of a lower leg for what appeared to be a hematoma or mass according to the U/S I had already ordered. Pt was in pain from the swelling and had surgery on this knee about 4 months prior. He had pain and swelling into the calf muscles of the affected leg prompting the U/S. I ordered an MRI, insurance said not until after an X-ray even without any injury and bruising or swelling of the knee. X-ray was negative, as expected. Called insurance back tried to do a Peer to Peer (previously told get X-ray and if negative MRI would be approved), refused to allow peer to peer with same physician even when she had said she would be available. MRI order denied. I called the radiologist, he reviewed U/S and said lets do a CT, they can't refuse a CT, guess what, yep, they refused the CT and said I should have ordered an MRI. During this time they were sending letters to the pt stating they were denying the MRI based off of established protocols. This all took almost 2 weeks and 1 employee almost 40 hours of documented work time! Pt was finally found to have a fracture and went back to Ortho.
