After years of various makes and models, my current laptop is my favorite. It is a Toshiba Portege R705. My partner has the newer version, the R835. At 13", it is very light and portable, but with a large enough screen and keyboard to make AC access (even via logmein) fairly comfortable. The battery life is amazing, and the price is not crazy.
We bought an iPad2 but also found the "mouse" to be too cumbersome for anything but an "emergency"; the Portege is light, not much bigger and so long as you have internet access, is far more practical for AC access with logmein. We kept the iPad2 for other (business!) uses.
