Hi Folks,
Yes there is a lag - and the slower the network, the longer the lag. Also, you should know that XP on the desktop is NOT designed to be a file server. You can see this especially when moving a large file from a shared folder on one computer to another computer.
We have on average 4 active users at any given time. (AC may be open on more computers, but idle) We use a dedicated server running Linux, although a fast windows server would work just fine. All DESKTOP machines should be wired to a good router or switch (not that I've seen anybody sell a network HUB in about 5 years). Only use wireless for your portable machines - BOTH will be faster that way.
Burt, you paid WAY too much! :-D I spent $300 for a high-speed rack mounted dual processor server on e-bay, and before deploying it installed all new hard drives for another $400 (I bought the GOOD drives!) I have it running Fedora Core Linux, and the thing SCREAMS. Seriously, though, you can get a small server running Windows for $2000 or less.
The key to making Amazing Charts run fast is a fast server and a fast network. Get a real switch, not a consumer-grade switch, as the throughput is better.
If you need a hand, give me a holler.
Regards,
V.
